ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Farm Buildings That Make Spirits Too

Rock River Distillation sits on a farm property along 170th Street in Rock Rapids, Iowa, a small town near the South Dakota border. Founded by local entrepreneur Chad Huebner, who transitioned from farming and construction work into craft distilling, the operation started in 2016 as Iowa’s northwest corner got its first legal distillery. Huebner converted existing farm buildings into a production facility, installing copper stills and creating a tasting room that maintains the agricultural character of the original structures. They produce vodka, whiskey, and flavored spirits using locally-sourced corn and grains when possible. The operation reflects the DIY spirit you’d expect from someone who built much of the facility himself, creating a genuinely grassroots craft distillery experience. You’re visiting someone’s working farm that happens to make spirits, not a polished tourist destination. The rural setting means you’ll drive through farmland to get there, and the experience feels authentically Iowa rather than trying to mimic Kentucky or Tennessee distillery culture.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Grain from the Field Outside the Window

Rock River represents Iowa farm-to-bottle distilling at its most authentic level, with founder Chad Huebner growing some of the corn used in production right on the property where the distillery operates. The agricultural integration goes beyond just sourcing – the distillery buildings are converted farm structures, and the operation maintains working farm aesthetics rather than trying to create an upscale tasting room experience. This is one of the few distilleries where you can literally see the grain fields that contribute to your glass, and Huebner’s background in construction means he built much of the distilling infrastructure himself, creating custom solutions rather than buying turnkey equipment.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Farm First Tourist Stop Second

You’ll visit what feels like a working farm operation first, distillery second, with Chad Huebner or his team walking you through the converted farm buildings that house the copper stills and aging areas. The tasting room maintains the practical, no-frills character of the agricultural setting, with concrete floors and utilitarian furnishings that prioritize function over Instagram appeal. Tours focus on the actual production process and the farm-to-bottle story, with Huebner sharing details about growing the corn, milling grains, and the challenges of starting a distillery in rural Iowa. You can often see the grain fields through the windows, connecting what’s in your glass directly to the land around you.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Deal Rural No Frills Required

Rock River appeals most to visitors who want an authentic, unpolished look at craft distilling without tourist-focused amenities. If you appreciate the farm-to-bottle story and want to meet a founder who genuinely built his operation from the ground up, you’ll find this more interesting than slick, corporate-feeling distilleries. However, don’t expect elaborate tours, extensive cocktail menus, or refined tasting room experiences. This is for spirits enthusiasts who value authenticity over amenities, and people who enjoy rural Iowa’s agricultural character rather than those seeking urban sophistication.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before making the drive since hours can be limited and the operation sometimes focuses on production over visitors during busy periods. Use GPS carefully as rural Iowa addresses can be tricky, and look for farm buildings rather than obvious distillery signage. Ask about the corn growing and milling process if you visit during growing season, as Huebner enjoys explaining the agricultural side of the operation. The rural location means this works well as part of a broader exploration of northwest Iowa rather than as a standalone destination from distant cities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Rock River Distillation — Visitor FAQ

Do you really grow the corn used in your spirits?
Yes, Chad Huebner grows corn on the same property where the distillery operates, though they also source additional grains locally when production demands exceed what the farm produces. You can often see the grain fields from the distillery buildings.
How far is this from Sioux Falls?
Rock Rapids is about 45 minutes northeast of Sioux Falls, making it an easy day trip from South Dakota’s largest city. The drive takes you through typical Iowa farmland on mostly rural roads.
Is this a working farm or just a distillery?
It’s genuinely both – the distillery operates on Chad’s working farm property, using converted agricultural buildings for production. This isn’t a farm-themed distillery but an actual farm operation that added distilling to its activities.
