ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Lawyer Who Traded His Practice for Copper

River Basin Distillery sits in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans, founded by Ryan Lange in 2018. Lange, a former attorney who got hooked on distilling after a vacation to Scotland, decided to trade his law practice for a copper still. The distillery operates out of a converted warehouse space on Montegut Street, where Lange and his small team produce small-batch spirits using Louisiana ingredients whenever possible. They focus primarily on whiskey and rum, with their bourbon featuring a high-corn mash bill aged in new American oak barrels. The operation stays intentionally small, with Lange handling much of the production himself on a 500-gallon copper pot still. The space feels more like a working distillery than a polished tasting room, with exposed brick walls, concrete floors, and the constant hum of fermentation tanks. You’ll often find Lange himself pouring tastings and talking visitors through his process, sharing stories about learning to distill and the challenges of sourcing quality grains in Louisiana. The distillery reflects New Orleans’ independent spirit, operating as a true craft operation where every bottle gets individual attention.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Louisiana Corn Becomes Bywater Bourbon

River Basin stands out as one of the few grain-to-glass distilleries operating in New Orleans proper, with Lange sourcing corn from Louisiana farms when possible to create a distinctly regional bourbon. The distillery’s location in the Bywater puts it in the heart of New Orleans’ creative community, far from the tourist crowds of the French Quarter. Lange’s background as an attorney gives him a unique perspective on the regulatory challenges of distilling, and he’s become something of an advocate for small distilleries navigating Louisiana’s complex liquor laws. The operation stays deliberately small, with Lange often working alone in the distillery, giving visitors a chance to meet the actual person making their whiskey rather than just a tour guide.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Man Making Your Whiskey

You’ll typically find Ryan Lange himself behind the small tasting bar, pouring samples and explaining his process with the enthusiasm of someone who still can’t believe he gets to do this for a living. The space feels authentic and unpolished, with the sweet smell of mash and the sight of actual production happening around you. Tastings are informal affairs, with Lange happy to pull different barrels or experimental batches if you show genuine interest in the process. The concrete floors and industrial setting won’t win any design awards, but you’ll get to taste spirits straight from the barrel and hear firsthand about the challenges and rewards of starting a distillery from scratch.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Distilling No Tourist Polish

This is perfect for whiskey enthusiasts who want to meet the actual distiller and understand small-scale production, but it’s not for people expecting a polished tourist experience. You’re visiting a working distillery where the focus is on the spirits, not the Instagram opportunities. If you’re genuinely curious about how whiskey gets made and want to support a true independent operation, you’ll appreciate the authenticity. Don’t expect elaborate tours or fancy glassware, but do expect to learn something real about distilling and taste some genuinely handcrafted spirits. The intimate setting means you’ll get more personal attention than at larger operations.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before visiting, as hours can be irregular when Lange is focused on production. The distillery is in a residential neighborhood, so parking on the street is usually fine but be respectful of neighbors. Ask about barrel samples if you’re interested in tasting spirits at different stages of aging. Lange is incredibly knowledgeable about the technical aspects of distilling, so don’t hesitate to ask detailed questions about mash bills or fermentation if you’re genuinely curious. The space is small, so large groups might feel cramped.

River Basin Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Is the founder usually there during visits?
Yes, Ryan Lange typically handles tastings and tours himself, so you’ll likely meet the actual person making the spirits. He’s passionate about sharing his process and the story of starting the distillery. Since it’s a small operation, he’s often the only person working, giving visitors a very personal experience.
What’s the neighborhood like around the distillery?
River Basin is located in the Bywater, a predominantly residential neighborhood that’s become popular with artists and young professionals. It’s much quieter than the French Quarter, with a more authentic New Orleans feel. Street parking is usually available, and there are several good restaurants and bars within walking distance.
Do they use Louisiana ingredients in their spirits?
Yes, Ryan Lange sources Louisiana corn for his bourbon when possible and uses Louisiana sugar cane for rum production. He’s committed to incorporating local ingredients when quality and availability allow, though he won’t compromise the final product for the sake of being local.
