Owens Valley Distilling Company sits in Bishop, California, right where the Sierra Nevada meets the high desert at 4,150 feet elevation. Founded by husband-and-wife team John and Michelle Ziegler, this small-batch operation launched in 2019 after years of planning and navigating California’s complex distillery licensing process. John brings a background in engineering while Michelle handles the business side, and together they’ve created something pretty unique in the Eastern Sierra.
The distillery occupies a modest industrial space on South Street, but don’t let the unassuming exterior fool you. Inside, they’re running a 250-gallon copper still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works, the same company that builds stills for Kentucky’s biggest names. They focus primarily on whiskey, using locally-sourced grains when possible and taking advantage of the dramatic temperature swings that come with high-altitude desert life. Those daily temperature fluctuations actually accelerate the aging process, pulling more flavor from the barrels faster than you’d see at sea level.
What started as John’s hobby during retirement quickly became a serious operation when friends kept asking where they could buy bottles. The Zieglers realized Bishop needed something beyond the typical tourist stops, and they were right. You’re looking at hand-bottled spirits with a distinctly Eastern Sierra character, aged in full-size barrels despite the small production runs. It’s the kind of place where you can actually talk to the people who made what you’re drinking.
