ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Outlaw Distillery sits in an industrial area of Sandy, Utah, where founders Mark and Lori Anderson turned their passion for craft spirits into reality in 2015. Mark, a former engineer, and Lori, who worked in marketing, decided to dive into distilling after years of home brewing and experimenting with spirits. They started small in a 4,000-square-foot facility, focusing on premium vodka, whiskey, and gin using locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible. The operation centers around their custom 500-liter copper still, imported from Germany, which allows them to control every aspect of the distillation process. What began as a weekend hobby evolved into Utah’s commitment to craft distilling, with the Andersons handling everything from grain-to-glass production to personally greeting visitors who stop by their tasting room. The space feels more like a workshop than a polished tourist destination, with exposed brick walls, concrete floors, and the constant hum of production equipment creating an authentic working distillery atmosphere.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Outlaw Distillery stands out in Utah’s limited spirits landscape by operating as one of the few craft distilleries in the Salt Lake valley area. They’ve carved out a niche by using Rocky Mountain water and sourcing grains from local Utah farms when possible, creating spirits that reflect their high-altitude desert environment. Mark Anderson’s engineering background shows in their precise distillation process and custom modifications to their German copper still, allowing for more controlled cuts and consistent quality. The husband-and-wife team handles the entire operation themselves, from mashing and fermenting to bottling and labeling, making every bottle a truly hands-on creation.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll walk into a working distillery where Mark or Lori Anderson will likely greet you personally and guide you through their compact operation. The space smells like fermenting grain and copper, with the sounds of bubbling fermenters and the occasional whoosh of the still creating an authentic production atmosphere. Tours are intimate affairs since the facility is small, giving you up-close views of their mash tuns, fermentation tanks, and that gleaming copper still. During tastings, you’ll sample their spirits directly from the source while hearing stories about their journey from weekend hobbyists to full-time distillers, and Mark’s engineering approach to perfecting each recipe.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

This is perfect for spirits enthusiasts who want an authentic, no-frills distillery experience rather than a polished tourist attraction. You’ll get genuine interaction with the actual founders and see real production happening, which beats the corporate tour experience at larger operations. However, don’t expect elaborate facilities or extensive gift shops – this is a working craft distillery first and foremost. If you’re interested in the technical side of distilling and want to support local Utah craft spirits, it’s definitely worth the drive to Sandy. Casual tourists looking for entertainment value might find it too industrial and straightforward.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule your visit since Mark and Lori run the operation themselves and may be tied up with production work. The location is in an industrial area, so GPS should get you there fine, but look for their modest signage on the building. Weekends tend to be better for visits since they’re more likely to be available for tours and tastings. Ask Mark about his engineering modifications to the still – he loves talking about the technical aspects and you’ll learn things you won’t hear elsewhere. Don’t expect a long tasting menu; focus on understanding their production process and the stories behind each spirit they’re currently making.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Outlaw Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to call ahead to visit?
Yes, definitely call ahead since Mark and Lori Anderson run the entire operation themselves. They might be in the middle of production work or away from the facility, so scheduling ensures they’re available to show you around and do tastings.
What spirits do they currently make?
They produce vodka, gin, and whiskey using their custom German copper still. Their lineup can vary based on what they’re currently distilling and aging, so ask about their current offerings when you visit.
Is this a large tourist operation?
Not at all – this is a small, authentic craft distillery run by the husband-and-wife founding team. It’s more like visiting someone’s workshop than a polished tourist attraction, which makes for a genuine but low-key experience.
