ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Irish Heritage Meets American Whiskey Making

O’Shaughnessy Distilling Co. sits in a converted warehouse space on Malcolm Avenue in Minneapolis, founded by Michael O’Shaughnessy in 2014. This Irish-American entrepreneur left behind a career in technology consulting to pursue his passion for whiskey making, drawing inspiration from his family’s Irish heritage and America’s bourbon traditions. The distillery occupies a 10,000-square-foot facility where they produce bourbon, rye whiskey, and Irish-style whiskey using both traditional copper pot stills and modern column stills. O’Shaughnessy started the operation with a clear vision: create premium American whiskeys with Old World craftsmanship, sourcing grains from Minnesota and Wisconsin farms whenever possible. The team includes master distiller Brian Nation, who previously worked at Jameson Irish Whiskey and brings decades of international experience to their Minneapolis operation. What began as a dream to honor Irish distilling traditions in the American Midwest has grown into one of Minnesota’s most respected craft distilleries. You’ll find a working production facility that balances heritage techniques with innovative approaches, creating whiskeys that reflect both their founder’s roots and their Minnesota home. The tasting room showcases their growing portfolio while offering visitors a chance to see the distilling process up close through large windows overlooking the production floor.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Jameson Expertise In Minneapolis

O’Shaughnessy bridges Irish and American whiskey traditions in a way few distilleries attempt, with master distiller Brian Nation bringing authentic Jameson experience to craft American bourbon and rye production. Their dual approach uses both copper pot stills for traditional Irish-style whiskeys and column stills for bourbon, allowing them to explore different flavor profiles within the same facility. The Minnesota location gives them access to excellent water and locally-sourced grains, while their commitment to extended aging in Minnesota’s extreme temperature swings creates unique maturation characteristics. Nation’s international pedigree combined with O’Shaughnessy’s entrepreneurial vision creates whiskeys that respect tradition while pushing boundaries.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Distillery Not Tourist Theater

The tasting room feels like a modern Irish pub crossed with an industrial distillery, featuring exposed brick, dark wood, and large windows overlooking the production floor where you can watch distillation in action. Tours are led by knowledgeable staff who explain both Irish and American whiskey traditions, taking you through their grain-to-glass process and highlighting the differences between their pot still and column still operations. Tastings include their core lineup along with limited releases, and the staff genuinely knows the stories behind each expression. The space has an authentic working distillery feel rather than a polished tourist attraction, and you’ll often catch the sweet smell of mash cooking or the sharp scent of fresh distillate.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Education Over Entertainment

If you’re interested in whiskey education and appreciate seeing traditional techniques applied in modern settings, O’Shaughnessy delivers a genuinely informative experience. The combination of Irish expertise and American innovation makes for compelling tastings, especially if you want to understand how different still types affect flavor. It’s particularly worthwhile for bourbon drinkers curious about Irish methods or Irish whiskey fans interested in American grain bills. The facility isn’t the largest or flashiest, but the authenticity and Brian Nation’s expertise make up for any lack of bells and whistles. Skip it if you’re looking for a party atmosphere or elaborate tours.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to book tours and tastings, as they don’t always accommodate walk-ins during busy periods. The facility can be tricky to find in the industrial area, so use GPS and look for the O’Shaughnessy signage on the building. Ask specifically about tasting their Irish-style pot still whiskey alongside their bourbon to understand the production differences. If Brian Nation or other production staff are available, don’t hesitate to ask technical questions about their processes. Parking is available on-site, and the space is easier to navigate than some cramped urban distilleries. Weekend visits tend to be busier, so weekday afternoons often provide more personal attention from staff.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

O’Shaughnessy Distilling Co. — Visitor FAQ

What’s the difference between your Irish-style whiskey and bourbon?
Our Irish-style whiskey is made using copper pot stills with traditional methods, creating a rounder, smoother profile. The bourbon uses column stills and American oak aging for more vanilla and spice characteristics. Tasting both side-by-side really highlights how production methods affect flavor.
Do I need to book tours in advance?
Yes, we strongly recommend calling ahead to reserve tour and tasting spots. As a working distillery, we sometimes have production schedules that limit visitor access, and weekends can book up quickly.
Can I buy bottles to take home?
Absolutely. Our tasting room stocks all current releases, and staff can help you choose based on what you enjoyed during your tasting. We often have limited releases available that aren’t distributed widely.
