ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Working Farm That Happens to Make Whiskey

Orange County Distillery sits on a working farm in Goshen, New York, about an hour north of Manhattan in the Hudson Valley. Founded in 2011 by John Glebocki and Bryan Ensall, it was New York’s first whiskey distillery since Prohibition. Glebocki, who previously worked in construction, and Ensall, with a background in finance, spent years navigating state regulations to make their vision reality. They produce bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, and gin in a converted dairy barn on 96 acres of farmland that’s been in Glebocki’s family for generations. The operation started small with a 500-gallon copper still from Germany, but they’ve expanded significantly since opening their doors to visitors in 2012. What began as two guys with a dream of making whiskey has grown into one of New York’s most established craft distilleries, complete with a tasting room, event space, and regular tours that show off both the distilling process and the beautiful farm setting. You’ll find them producing everything from their flagship corn whiskey to seasonal specialties, all while maintaining that farm-to-bottle approach that uses local ingredients whenever possible.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

New York's First Since Prohibition

This is New York’s first whiskey distillery since Prohibition ended, which gives it genuine historical significance in the state’s spirits revival. The farm setting isn’t just for show—they grow some of their own corn and source other grains locally, creating a true farm-to-bottle operation that most distilleries can’t match. The converted dairy barn adds authentic agricultural character, and the 96-acre property provides a completely different experience from industrial distillery parks. Their German copper still and traditional methods produce spirits that reflect both the local terroir and old-world techniques, while their willingness to experiment with different grain bills and aging processes has resulted in some genuinely innovative products.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Real Farm Setting Not Tourist Trap

Tours take you through the converted dairy barn where you can see the copper still in action and learn about their grain-to-glass process from knowledgeable staff who genuinely care about what they’re making. The tasting room has a relaxed, farmhouse feel with views of the property, and tastings include their core lineup plus seasonal offerings that might not be available elsewhere. You’ll smell the mash cooking and hear the real stories about starting a distillery from scratch in New York, including the regulatory battles and learning curve that came with being first. The setting feels authentic rather than polished—this is a working farm first, tourist destination second, which makes the experience more genuine than many slicker operations.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Hudson Valley Pioneer Worth the Drive

If you’re interested in craft distilling history or want to see a real farm-to-bottle operation, absolutely. The combination of being New York’s whiskey pioneer and the genuine agricultural setting makes it worth the drive from NYC or Albany. Their spirits have won awards and the story behind getting New York’s first distillery license is fascinating. However, if you’re looking for a large-scale production facility or highly polished visitor center, this might feel too rustic. It’s better suited for spirits enthusiasts who appreciate the craft and story over flashy presentations. The Hudson Valley location also makes it easy to combine with other regional attractions.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website for tour schedules—they’re not always running tours during production times. Spring through fall offers the best experience when you can appreciate the farm setting and outdoor spaces. Ask about their grain sourcing and aging experiments during your visit, as the staff loves talking about their process innovations. Parking is easy on the farm property, but GPS can be tricky in rural Goshen, so double-check directions. If you’re coming from NYC, weekends get busier, so weekday visits often provide more personal attention. Try their seasonal releases if available—they often experiment with limited batches that showcase different techniques.
