ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Where Tennessee Moonshine Became Legal Again

Ole Smoky Distillery “The Holler” sits right on the Parkway in downtown Gatlinburg, making it impossible to miss with its rustic mountain facade and the constant stream of tourists flowing in and out. Founded by Joe Baker, Cory Cottongim, and Tony Breeden in 2010, this was Tennessee’s first legal moonshine distillery since Prohibition ended. The trio grew up in East Tennessee hearing stories about their families’ moonshining heritage and decided to bring those recipes out of the hills and into the legal light of day. What started as a 2,500-square-foot facility has expanded into multiple locations, but “The Holler” remains the flagship where it all began. They produce moonshine, whiskey, and an impressive array of flavored spirits that range from traditional corn-based ‘shine to creative concoctions like banana pudding and cinnamon moonshine. The building captures that authentic Appalachian feel with reclaimed wood, mason jar lighting, and the constant sound of bluegrass music, though it’s definitely designed for the tourist crowds that pack Gatlinburg year-round. You’ll find copper stills visible through windows and plenty of opportunities to sample their extensive lineup of spirits that have helped put Tennessee moonshine back on the map legally.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Family Recipes From Prohibition Days

This is literally where legal moonshine came back to Tennessee after decades underground. Baker, Cottongim, and Breeden didn’t just start a distillery—they changed state law to make it happen, working with legislators to create the framework that allowed craft distilleries to operate and sell on-site in Tennessee. Their recipes come from actual family moonshine traditions passed down through generations of East Tennessee shiners, and they’ve managed to scale those small-batch techniques to produce over 20 different varieties of moonshine and whiskey. The location puts you right in the heart of Gatlinburg’s tourist district, which means you’re tasting authentic mountain spirits while surrounded by the controlled chaos of one of America’s busiest vacation destinations.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Tourist District Energy Mountain Spirit Tradition

You’ll walk into a space that feels part authentic distillery, part theme park attraction. The staff moves quickly through tastings since there’s usually a crowd, but they know their products and the stories behind them. You can see the copper pot stills through windows and watch the bottling process, though the real experience is in the extensive tasting bar where you’ll sample everything from traditional white lightning to dessert-inspired flavors like apple pie and peach. The atmosphere stays lively with country music and the constant flow of visitors, so don’t expect an intimate craft distillery experience. It’s more like moonshine education meets Gatlinburg entertainment, complete with mason jar merchandise and plenty of photo opportunities.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth It For The History Lesson

If you’re in Gatlinburg and want to understand Tennessee’s moonshine heritage, absolutely. This isn’t the place for quiet contemplation of craft spirits—it’s designed for tourists who want to taste authentic moonshine recipes in a fun, accessible setting. The educational value is real since you’re learning about actual mountain traditions, and the product quality is solid even if the atmosphere leans commercial. Skip it if you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path craft distillery experience, but embrace it if you want to taste legitimate moonshine without hiking into the hills to find a still.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

No reservations needed for basic tastings, but expect crowds during peak tourist seasons and weekends. Parking on the Parkway can be brutal, so consider walking from your hotel or using the trolley system. The staff will let you taste most of their lineup, so pace yourself—some of those flavored moonshines go down easier than you’d expect but still pack 50+ proof. Ask about their white lightning if you want to taste what traditional moonshine actually tastes like before trying the flavored versions. The gift shop gets packed, so grab your bottles early in your visit rather than fighting the crowd on your way out.
