ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Downtown Zebulon's First Legal Distillery Since Prohibition

Olde Raleigh Distillery sits in downtown Zebulon, about 20 miles east of Raleigh, where founders Matt and Jennifer Joyner turned their passion for craft spirits into North Carolina’s boutique whiskey operation. They opened in 2018 after Matt, a former IT professional, spent years perfecting recipes in his garage before taking the leap into commercial distilling. The couple converted a former automotive shop into their 3,000-square-foot production facility, complete with a custom-built 300-gallon copper pot still and small tasting room that feels more like visiting friends than a corporate tour. The operation focuses on small-batch bourbon, rye, and seasonal spirits using North Carolina grains whenever possible. You’ll find them working the stills themselves most days, and Jennifer often runs the tasting room where she’ll walk you through their growing lineup of aged spirits. The Joyners didn’t just want to make whiskey—they wanted to bring craft distilling back to a town that once had several legal distilleries before Prohibition wiped them out. Their approach stays deliberately small-scale, with annual production around 1,000 cases, allowing them to experiment with different mash bills and aging techniques that larger operations can’t risk.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Engineering Meets Whiskey In Small Batch Science

What sets Olde Raleigh apart is their commitment to being Zebulon’s first legal distillery since the 1920s, combined with Matt’s engineering background that shows up in their precise fermentation process and custom equipment modifications. They’re one of the few North Carolina distilleries aging everything on-site in 15 and 30-gallon barrels, which accelerates maturation in the Carolina heat while creating more wood contact than standard 53-gallon barrels. The Joyners also source heritage corn varieties from local farms when available, and Matt’s built relationships with specific grain suppliers to ensure consistency batch to batch. Their rye whiskey uses a 95% rye mash bill that’s uncommon for Carolina distilleries, and they char their own barrel heads to specific levels rather than buying pre-charred cooperage.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Distillers Who Actually Make Your Bottle

The experience feels intimate since you’re usually talking directly with Matt or Jennifer in their compact tasting room that doubles as retail space. Tours include seeing their mash tun, fermentation tanks, and copper still up close—Matt explains the technical details without dumbing it down, and he’s happy to let you smell the mash or peek into fermentation tanks. Tastings typically feature four or five spirits including their flagship bourbon, high-rye bourbon, straight rye, and whatever seasonal offerings they have available. The space smells like grain and wood, and you’ll hear the still running if you visit during production days. Jennifer keeps detailed notes on each barrel and can tell you specific aging details for whatever you’re tasting.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Spirits No Corporate Polish Required

If you’re into craft spirits and want to meet the people actually making your whiskey, this hits the mark perfectly. It’s not a polished corporate experience—you’re visiting a working distillery where the owners handle everything from mashing grain to bottling by hand. Whiskey enthusiasts will appreciate Matt’s technical knowledge and willingness to discuss the science behind fermentation and distillation. Casual visitors might find it less impressive than larger operations with fancy tasting rooms, but anyone interested in supporting local business and seeing how small-batch whiskey actually gets made will leave satisfied. The spirits themselves are solid for a young distillery, though don’t expect decades-aged bourbon since they’re still building inventory.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page since hours can vary with production schedules, and Jennifer sometimes handles tastings solo on weekends. Parking is easy right outside their building on North Arendell Avenue. Saturday afternoons tend to be best for catching both Matt and Jennifer there together. Ask about their barrel aging program if you’re interested in buying a private barrel—they’ll let you sample from different barrels to find one you like. Don’t expect a long tour since it’s a small operation, but do ask Matt about his fermentation process if you’re into the technical side. They usually have bottles available for purchase, but selection depends on what they’ve got ready to release.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Olde Raleigh — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make an appointment for tastings?
Not required but recommended since Matt and Jennifer often run the place themselves and production schedules can affect availability. Check their Facebook page for current hours or call ahead to make sure they’re open for visitors.
How long has Olde Raleigh been aging their whiskey?
They opened in 2018 and started laying down barrels immediately, so their aged spirits have 2-4 years on them now. They use smaller 15 and 30-gallon barrels which mature faster than standard 53-gallon barrels in North Carolina’s climate.
What makes their whiskey different from other NC distilleries?
Matt’s engineering background shows in their precise fermentation control and custom equipment modifications. They’re also aging everything on-site in smaller barrels and focus on high-rye mash bills that are less common in Carolina whiskey.
