ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Husband-Wife Farm Operation Making Scottish-Style Whiskey

Old Scotland Road Distillery sits on a seven-acre property in rural Akron, New York, about 30 minutes east of Buffalo. Founded by husband-and-wife team Tom and Michelle Riehl in 2017, this farm distillery started as a retirement project that quickly evolved into something much bigger. Tom, a former engineer, and Michelle, who handled the business side, wanted to create something that connected them to the land and their Scottish heritage. They spent nearly three years navigating permits and building out their facility in a converted barn structure, finally opening their doors in 2020. The property includes the main distillery building, tasting room, and plenty of outdoor space where they host events and let visitors soak in the countryside setting. They focus primarily on whiskey production, though they’ve expanded into vodka and gin to keep cash flow steady while their bourbon ages. The Riehls handle most operations themselves with help from a small team, keeping things personal and hands-on. You’re likely to meet Tom during your visit, as he’s usually around checking on the stills or chatting with guests about the process. The whole operation reflects their philosophy of taking time to do things right rather than rushing to market with mediocre products.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

New York Grain Meets Scottish Techniques

What sets Old Scotland Road apart is their commitment to grain-to-glass production using as much New York-grown grain as possible, sourcing corn and wheat from farms within 50 miles of the distillery. Tom built much of the equipment himself, including custom fermentation tanks, drawing on his engineering background to solve problems and optimize their process. They use a 500-gallon copper pot still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works for their whiskey production, and they’re aging everything on-site in full-size barrels rather than taking shortcuts with smaller cooperage. The Scottish influence runs deeper than the name – they incorporate some traditional Scottish whisky-making techniques into their bourbon production, including longer fermentation times and careful attention to cuts during distillation.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers Not the Marketing Team

The tasting room occupies part of the main barn structure, with exposed beams and a rustic but comfortable feel that fits the rural setting. Tom or Michelle typically handle tastings personally, walking you through their current lineup while explaining how each spirit reflects their approach to distilling. Tours include the production floor where you can see their mash tun, fermenters, and copper still up close, plus the rickhouse where barrels are aging. The whole experience feels intimate – you’re not part of a large group being rushed through a scripted presentation. Instead, it’s more like visiting friends who happen to make excellent spirits and love talking about their craft. The outdoor space adds to the appeal, especially during warmer months when you can enjoy a tasting while taking in views of the surrounding farmland.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Rural Drive For Authentic Craft

If you’re drawn to small-scale, authentic distillery experiences over polished tourist attractions, Old Scotland Road delivers. This isn’t the place for elaborate tours or fancy gift shops – it’s about meeting the people behind the spirits and understanding their process firsthand. Whiskey enthusiasts will appreciate tasting barrel samples and discussing the nuances of grain bills and aging with someone who’s intimately involved in every step. The rural location means it requires some intentional planning to visit, but that also means you won’t be fighting crowds or feeling rushed. It’s particularly appealing if you enjoy supporting truly local operations and want to taste spirits that aren’t available in stores yet.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page before visiting, as hours can vary seasonally and they sometimes close for private events or production needs. The distillery is a bit off the beaten path, so GPS is essential – look for the Scotland Road address rather than trying to find it by the distillery name alone. Parking is easy with plenty of space on the gravel lot. If you’re interested in their whiskey, ask about barrel samples of their aging stock, as Tom’s usually happy to pull something from the rickhouse if you’re genuinely curious about the maturation process. They often have seasonal spirits or limited releases available only at the distillery, so it’s worth asking what’s new since your last visit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What spirits do you currently have available?
They produce vodka and gin that are available now, plus bourbon that’s aging in their warehouse. Tom’s often willing to share barrel samples of the aging whiskey during tastings if you’re interested in following the maturation process.
