ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Town Called Bourbon Gets Its Own Distillery

Old Road Craft Spirits sits on West Pine Street in Bourbon, Missouri – and yes, the town name is as perfect as it sounds for a craft distillery. Founded by husband-and-wife team Josh and Jenny Becker in 2019, this small-batch operation transformed a former auto repair shop into a modern distillery that’s quickly becoming a destination for spirits enthusiasts. The Beckers, who previously worked in IT and healthcare respectively, decided to pursue their passion for craft distilling after years of home brewing and attending whiskey festivals across the Midwest. Their 1,200-square-foot facility houses a custom 250-gallon copper still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works, the same company that builds stills for major Kentucky distilleries. They focus primarily on bourbon and rye whiskey, though they also produce a corn whiskey and seasonal gin. The journey to opening wasn’t without challenges – it took the Beckers nearly three years to navigate Missouri’s licensing requirements and secure financing for their equipment. Josh trained under a master distiller in Kentucky for six months before launching production, while Jenny handles the business operations and tasting room experience. Their philosophy centers on using locally-sourced grains when possible, working with farms within a 100-mile radius for their corn and wheat. The distillery’s name pays homage to the old roads that connected Missouri’s farming communities, reflecting their commitment to supporting local agriculture. Visitors get an intimate look at small-scale craft distilling in action. The tasting room occupies the front of the building with exposed brick walls and reclaimed wood fixtures, while the production area is visible through large windows. Tours are personal affairs – usually led by Josh or Jenny themselves – where you’ll see every step from grain-in to bottle-out. The atmosphere is relaxed and educational, perfect for both whiskey novices and enthusiasts who want to understand the craft behind the spirit.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Farm Names on Every Bottle

What sets Old Road apart is their commitment to transparency and local sourcing in an industry often focused on marketing mystique. Josh openly shares their mash bills, fermentation schedules, and aging processes – you’ll see exact recipes written on whiteboards in the production area. They’re one of the few Missouri distilleries that sources grain directly from specific farms rather than commodity suppliers, and they can tell you exactly which farm grew the corn in your glass. Their small scale allows for experimentation that larger distilleries can’t match – they regularly test different yeast strains and barrel char levels in 15-gallon experimental batches. The location in Bourbon, Missouri adds an element of authenticity that can’t be manufactured, and the Beckers have embraced the town’s whiskey heritage by partnering with the local historical society to research the area’s pre-Prohibition distilling history.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Your Friends Who Happen to Distill

Tours at Old Road feel more like visiting friends who happen to distill whiskey than a formal tourist experience. Josh or Jenny walk you through their entire 90-minute process while production is actually happening – you’ll smell the sweet mash fermenting in open-top fermenters and watch them make cuts on the still if you visit during production days (Tuesday through Thursday). The tasting room has a comfortable living room vibe with leather chairs and a small bar where tastings happen. You’ll typically sample four spirits with detailed explanations of the production differences between each. The space smells like vanilla and caramel from the aging barrels stored in the back room, and the sound of the still running creates a gentle background hum during production days.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

For Whiskey Geeks Pure Gold

Old Road is definitely worth a stop if you’re interested in understanding how craft whiskey actually gets made rather than just tasting the end result. It’s perfect for people who like asking detailed questions and getting honest, technical answers – Josh doesn’t sugarcoat the challenges of small-scale distilling or pretend everything they make is perfect. The intimate setting means you’ll learn more about the actual craft in 90 minutes than you would on most large distillery tours. However, if you’re looking for a polished, Instagram-ready experience or want to taste aged whiskey (most of their current releases are under two years old), this might not be your ideal stop. The building is functional rather than beautiful, and the selection is limited compared to established distilleries. But for whiskey geeks who want to see craft distilling in its authentic form, it’s exactly what you’re looking for.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to book tours – they only run them when Josh or Jenny are available, typically weekends and some weekday afternoons. If possible, visit on production days (Tuesday through Thursday) when you can see the still in operation and smell active fermentation. Ask Josh about their experimental batches – he’s usually excited to share tastes of works-in-progress that won’t be released for months. The GPS gets you close but look for the small sign on the building – it’s easy to miss. Parking is limited to about six spots in front, so larger groups should coordinate arrival times. Don’t expect a gift shop full of merchandise – they focus their resources on making spirits rather than branded t-shirts. If you’re driving from Kansas City or St. Louis, combine your visit with the nearby Meramec Caverns or other area attractions since Bourbon is a small town without much else to do.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Old Road Craft Spirits — Visitor FAQ

How far ahead do I need to book a tour?
We recommend booking at least a week in advance, especially for weekend tours. Call us directly rather than trying to book online – we like to talk with visitors beforehand to set expectations and answer any initial questions about our process.
Can I buy your whiskey anywhere else besides the distillery?
Currently we only sell at the distillery due to our small production volume. We’re working on distribution to a few local liquor stores in the area, but for now, visiting us is the only way to take a bottle home. We do ship within Missouri for customers who’ve visited us in person.
Why is your bourbon only aged 18 months when most bourbon is aged longer?
We’re still a young distillery, so our oldest whiskey is only as old as we’ve been in production. Missouri’s hot summers and cold winters actually age whiskey faster than Kentucky’s climate, so our 18-month bourbon has more oak influence than you might expect. We’re excited to release our first 2-year and eventually 3-year expressions as our inventory matures.
