Old Homestead Distilling Co. sits on a quiet stretch of Station Drive in Eckerty, Indiana, about 45 minutes northwest of Louisville. Founded by husband-and-wife team Jeff and Tammy Lindsey in 2018, this small-batch operation emerged from Jeff’s 20-year career in engineering and Tammy’s background in hospitality. The distillery occupies a purpose-built 3,000-square-foot facility designed around a 500-gallon copper still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works. They focus primarily on bourbon and moonshine, with plans to expand into rye whiskey as their aging inventory matures.
The Lindseys spent three years navigating permits and perfecting their recipes before opening to the public. Jeff’s engineering background shows in the precision of their mash bills and fermentation process, while Tammy handles the visitor experience and retail operations. They source corn locally from southern Indiana farms and use a wheated bourbon recipe that reflects Jeff’s preference for smoother, sweeter profiles. The operation remains deliberately small – they produce about 50 barrels annually, allowing them to oversee every step personally.
Visitors enter a tasting room that doubles as retail space, with large windows overlooking the production floor. The atmosphere feels more like visiting neighbors than touring a commercial facility. Tours are intimate affairs, usually led by Jeff himself, who walks you through their grain-to-glass process while explaining the science behind fermentation and distillation. You can watch them mill grain, check fermentation tanks, and see bourbon flowing from the still – assuming you visit during production hours on weekdays.
