ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Mountain Recipes Meet Modern Craft

Old Forge Distillery sits on Old Mill Avenue in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, making it one of the most accessible craft distilleries in the Smoky Mountains. Founded by Jimmy Calloway, a former auto parts distributor who caught the distilling bug after years of home brewing, the operation opened in 2014 in a 6,000-square-foot facility designed to handle both production and visitors. They focus on small-batch Tennessee whiskey, moonshine, and flavored spirits that capture the mountain heritage of the region. The distillery operates with a 500-gallon copper still and ages their whiskey in 15 and 30-gallon barrels, allowing for faster maturation in Tennessee’s humidity. Calloway partnered with experienced distillers to develop recipes that honor traditional Appalachian methods while meeting modern palates. The facility includes both production space and a tasting room where visitors can sample everything from traditional white lightning to barrel-aged Tennessee whiskey. What started as Calloway’s retirement project has become a legitimate player in Tennessee’s craft spirits scene, producing around 2,000 cases annually. The location puts you right in the heart of Pigeon Forge’s tourist corridor, but the focus remains on authentic mountain spirits rather than touristy gimmicks.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Four Generation Moonshine Recipes Made Legal

Old Forge stands out for its commitment to traditional Tennessee mountain recipes combined with modern quality control. Calloway sourced original moonshine recipes from local families, some dating back four generations, and adapted them for legal production while maintaining their authentic character. The distillery uses Tennessee spring water and sources corn from local farms when possible, creating a genuine connection to the region’s agricultural heritage. Their accelerated aging process using smaller barrels produces whiskey with surprising complexity for a relatively young operation, and they’re not afraid to experiment with different wood types and finishes.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Distillery Not Tourist Trap

You’ll walk into a working distillery where the smell of fermenting grain and aging spirits fills the air. The tasting room feels more like a mountain cabin than a slick tourist trap, with exposed beams and local artwork on the walls. Tours take about 30 minutes and include the fermentation room, still room, and barrel storage area, with Jimmy or one of his team explaining each step of the process. The tastings include their core lineup plus seasonal offerings, and the staff knows their products well enough to recommend spirits based on your preferences rather than pushing the most expensive bottles.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Mountain Spirits Without the Markup

If you’re exploring Pigeon Forge and want to taste authentic mountain spirits without the tourist trap markup, Old Forge delivers. It’s particularly good for people who appreciate traditional moonshine culture but want professional-quality spirits. You won’t find the most innovative craft cocktails or elaborate tours here, but you’ll get honest mountain spirits made by people who care about the craft. The location makes it easy to combine with other Pigeon Forge attractions, and the prices are reasonable for the area.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead during peak season since the tasting room can get crowded, especially on weekends. Parking can be tricky during busy times, so arrive early or be prepared to walk a few blocks. Ask specifically about their barrel-aged moonshine if you want something beyond the clear spirits most people expect. The staff appreciates when visitors show genuine interest in the production process rather than just wanting to get drunk on samples. Try their Tennessee whiskey if it’s available—it’s often overlooked in favor of the moonshine but shows real craftsmanship.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Old Forge Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do you offer traditional moonshine or just flavored varieties?
We make traditional white lightning at 100 proof along with flavored varieties. The traditional moonshine is our foundation—everything else builds from there. Many visitors are surprised by how smooth and clean real moonshine tastes compared to what they expect.
How long does the tour and tasting take?
The complete tour takes about 30 minutes, and tastings usually run another 15-20 minutes depending on how many questions you have. You can do just the tasting if you’re short on time, but the tour really helps you appreciate what goes into each bottle.
Can I buy bottles to take home?
Yes, we sell all our spirits on-site, and you can often find bottles here that aren’t available in stores yet. We can also ship to most states if you want to order more after you get home.
