ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Oakhurst Spirits sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills at 2,300 feet elevation, making it one of California’s highest-altitude distilleries. Founded in 2018 by Jim and Laura Beam (no relation to the Kentucky family), this husband-and-wife operation converted a former logging equipment warehouse into their 4,000-square-foot distillery and tasting room. Jim, a retired aerospace engineer from Lockheed Martin, and Laura, a former sommelier, decided to pursue distilling after years of home brewing and a fascination with the area’s logging history. They produce small-batch whiskey, vodka, and seasonal spirits using their custom 500-gallon copper pot still named ‘Sierra Belle.’ The couple’s philosophy centers on using Sierra Nevada snowmelt water and locally-sourced grains whenever possible, creating spirits that reflect the mountain terroir. Their facility includes the production area, a rustic tasting room with reclaimed wood from local logging operations, and a small retail space. The operation runs lean with just the two founders handling everything from mashing to bottling, giving visitors an intimate look at craft distilling. You’ll often find Jim explaining the fermentation process while Laura guides tastings, sharing stories about their transition from corporate careers to mountain distillers. The space retains its warehouse feel with exposed beams and concrete floors, but they’ve added mountain charm with vintage logging photos and handcrafted furniture.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

The 2,300-foot elevation creates unique aging conditions you won’t find at lower altitudes, with greater temperature swings that accelerate the interaction between spirits and oak. Jim’s aerospace engineering background shows in their precise temperature controls and custom-built equipment modifications, including a computerized monitoring system that tracks fermentation conditions to the degree. They’re the only distillery in the region using Sierra snowmelt exclusively, which Jim insists creates a cleaner base for their spirits. The building’s history as a logging warehouse connects directly to their whiskey aging program, where they use barrels charred with wood from the same forests that supplied the original logging operations.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll walk into a working distillery where Jim or Laura personally guide every tasting, usually lasting 30-45 minutes. The space smells like grain and oak with hints of the pine forest just outside. Jim loves diving into the technical details of distillation while Laura focuses on flavor profiles and food pairings. Their tasting bar seats eight people maximum, making it feel more like visiting friends than a commercial operation. You can see their entire operation from the tasting room, and they’re happy to walk you through the milling, fermentation, and distillation areas. The mountain setting means you’ll often hear wind through the pines and see deer wandering the property.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

This appeals to spirits enthusiasts who appreciate small-scale operations and personal attention from the actual distillers. You’ll get genuine education about the craft and taste spirits made literally feet from where you’re sitting. It’s not polished or fancy, but that’s the point – you’re seeing real craft distilling without the tourist packaging. Skip this if you want elaborate tours or flashy presentations. The drive up the mountain takes commitment, and their limited hours mean you need to plan ahead. But for authenticity and personal connection to the makers, it’s hard to beat.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page since they sometimes close for production days or bad weather. The GPS coordinates can be tricky in the mountains, so look for the weathered ‘Oakhurst Spirits’ sign on Greenwood Way. Weekends are busiest, but Jim and Laura prefer smaller groups, so weekday visits often get more personal attention. Ask Jim about his engineering modifications to traditional distilling equipment – he loves explaining the technical improvements. Try their barrel-proof whiskey if available, as it best showcases their high-altitude aging effects. Parking is gravel and limited to about six cars.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Oakhurst Spirits — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to call ahead to visit?
Yes, definitely call first since Jim and Laura run the operation themselves and sometimes close for production days. Their schedule can change based on weather conditions or equipment maintenance, so a quick call saves the mountain drive.
How long does a tasting take?
Plan on 45 minutes to an hour. Jim and Laura don’t rush tastings, especially if you’re genuinely interested in the distilling process. They’ll often extend conversations if you have good questions about their techniques or the spirits.
What makes their spirits different from other craft distilleries?
The 2,300-foot elevation creates unique aging conditions with bigger temperature swings, and they use only Sierra Nevada snowmelt water. Jim’s engineering background also shows in custom equipment modifications that most small distilleries couldn’t pull off.
