Nineteen O’ Nine Whiskey Bar sits inside Sagamore Spirit Distillery at 301 East Cromwell Street in Baltimore’s Port Covington waterfront district, occupying a massive 22,000-square-foot former Procter & Gamble manufacturing facility. Founded by Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank in 2016, Sagamore Spirit takes its name from the arrow-shaped weather vane atop his nearby Sagamore Farm in Baltimore County, where Plank breeds thoroughbred racehorses. The distillery produces Maryland-style rye whiskey using both Maryland and Indiana-sourced spirits, with plans to transition entirely to their own production as their whiskey ages.
Plank’s journey into whiskey started with his passion for Maryland’s distilling heritage and his connection to the land through horse breeding. He partnered with industry veteran Brian Treacy as president and brought in master distiller Drew Westervelt, formerly of High West Distillery, to oversee production. The operation includes custom-built pot stills and a bottling line capable of producing 100,000 cases annually. Their approach combines respect for Maryland’s pre-Prohibition rye tradition with modern techniques, using a high-rye mash bill that reflects the state’s historical whiskey profile.
The industrial-chic space houses both production facilities and Nineteen O’ Nine, a full-service whiskey bar that opened in 2019. You’ll find exposed brick walls, steel beams, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the distillery floor where massive fermentation tanks and copper stills operate. The bar serves craft cocktails made with Sagamore spirits alongside a curated selection of other American whiskeys, creating an atmosphere that’s part working distillery, part upscale cocktail lounge.
