ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Beer and Spirits Under One Roof

Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Co. sits on JT Connell Highway in Newport, Rhode Island, where founders Brent Ryan and Derek Luke opened their doors in 2008 as primarily a brewery before expanding into distilling. Ryan, a former financial advisor, and Luke, who worked in hospitality, decided to chase their passion for craft beverages in a 10,000-square-foot facility that houses both brewing and distilling operations. The space feels industrial but welcoming, with exposed brick walls, concrete floors, and towering fermentation tanks sharing space with copper stills. They produce a range of spirits including vodka, gin, rum, and whiskey, alongside their well-established beer lineup that put them on the map first. The operation reflects Newport’s maritime character, with several spirits drawing inspiration from the coastal location and local ingredients. What started as two friends wanting to make great beer evolved into a full craft beverage operation that’s become a fixture in Rhode Island’s growing craft spirits scene. The distillery side launched several years after the brewery was established, allowing them to build a solid foundation and customer base before diving into the more complex world of spirits production.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Rhode Island's Pirate Rum From Craft Brewers

Newport Craft stands out as one of Rhode Island’s few combination brewery-distilleries, giving visitors a rare chance to see both beer and spirits production under one roof. Their location in Newport puts them in the heart of a tourist destination, but they’ve maintained focus on being a legitimate production facility rather than just a tasting room. The maritime influence shows up in their Thomas Tew Rum, named after a Rhode Island pirate, and their approach to gin incorporates botanicals that reflect New England’s coastal character. Being established brewers first gave them a head start on fermentation knowledge when they moved into distilling, and you can taste that expertise in their cleaner, more refined spirits.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Industrial Facility Authentic as It Gets

You’ll walk into a working production facility where the smell of fermenting grain mixes with hops and the clean bite of distilling alcohol. The tasting room overlooks the production floor, so you can watch both brewing and distilling operations while sampling their lineup. Staff members are usually brewers or distillers who can explain the technical differences between making beer versus spirits, and they’re genuinely enthusiastic about both sides of the operation. The space feels authentic rather than polished, with concrete floors and industrial lighting that remind you this is a working facility first and tourist destination second.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

More Than Expected In Tourist Newport

If you’re interested in seeing how craft beverages get made from grain to glass, Newport Craft offers good value since you can compare their beer and spirits side by side. It’s particularly worth visiting if you’re already in Newport for the mansions or waterfront, as it provides a grittier, more authentic local experience. The combination of beer and spirits means there’s something for everyone in your group, even if some people aren’t into whiskey or gin. Don’t expect the most polished visitor experience in New England, but do expect honest craft production and knowledgeable staff who actually make what you’re drinking.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm they’re open for tastings, as production schedules can sometimes interfere with visitor hours. The facility is on a main highway, so GPS should get you there without trouble, and they have adequate parking on site. If you’re visiting Newport’s tourist attractions, save this for later in the day when you want something more low-key and authentic. Ask about the differences between their brewing and distilling processes if you’re curious about the technical side. Their beer selection is more extensive than their spirits lineup, so don’t go expecting a dozen different whiskeys, but do try their rum if you want something distinctly local.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Co. — Visitor FAQ

Do you make both beer and spirits on site?
Yes, Newport Craft operates both a brewery and distillery in the same facility. They started as a brewery in 2008 and added distilling operations later, so you can see both processes during your visit and taste products from both sides of the operation.
What’s the difference between visiting here versus other distilleries?
The main difference is that you get to see beer and spirits production side by side, which helps you understand the similarities and differences between the two processes. The facility feels more like a working production space than a polished tasting room, which some visitors prefer for its authenticity.
Is this worth visiting if I’m already doing Newport’s mansion tours?
Absolutely, especially if you want a break from the formal tourist attractions. Newport Craft gives you a more authentic local experience and a chance to see how modern craft beverages are actually made, which provides a nice contrast to the historical mansion tours.
