ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

High Desert Distilling Against All Odds

New Basin Distilling Company sits in Madras, Oregon, founded by husband-and-wife team Paul and Marla VanderVeldt who traded their Portland corporate careers for the dream of making whiskey in Central Oregon’s high desert. They opened their doors in 2016 after a three-year journey of permits, equipment installation, and learning the craft from scratch. The distillery operates out of a 4,000-square-foot facility on St. Andrews Drive, housing their custom copper still and barrel aging room where they produce bourbon, rye whiskey, and vodka. Paul handles the distilling operations while Marla manages the business side, creating a true family operation that reflects their commitment to bringing craft spirits to Oregon’s underserved eastern region. The name “New Basin” comes from the geological basin that defines the Madras area, connecting their spirits to the unique high desert terroir that influences everything from their water source to the aging process. Their approach focuses on traditional methods adapted to Oregon’s climate, using locally-sourced grains when possible and letting the dramatic temperature swings of the high desert work their magic on the aging barrels.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Elevation and Temperature Change Everything

What sets New Basin apart is their location in Oregon’s high desert, where elevation of 2,400 feet and dramatic daily temperature swings create unique aging conditions for their whiskey. The VanderVeldts chose Madras specifically for its water quality and the microclimate that accelerates the interaction between spirit and oak. They’re one of the few craft distilleries serving Central and Eastern Oregon, filling a geographic gap in the state’s spirits landscape. Paul’s background in engineering shows in their methodical approach to distilling, while their small scale allows them to experiment with different grain bills and aging techniques that larger operations can’t pursue.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers Not the Marketing

Visits to New Basin offer an intimate look at small-batch distilling in action, with Paul or Marla personally leading tours through their compact but efficient operation. You’ll see their copper still up close, learn about their grain-to-glass process, and understand how the high desert climate affects aging. The tasting room showcases their current lineup with detailed explanations of each spirit’s production story. The space feels more like visiting friends than a commercial operation, with the VanderVeldts sharing honest insights about the challenges and rewards of craft distilling in rural Oregon.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

True Craft Spirits Worth the Drive

New Basin appeals to whiskey enthusiasts who appreciate the story behind small-scale production and want to support true craft distilling. If you’re touring Central Oregon and want to experience something authentically local rather than polished tourist attractions, this fits perfectly. The personal attention and intimate setting make it ideal for serious spirits drinkers who enjoy learning about process and terroir. It’s not a destination for large groups or casual tourists looking for entertainment, but rather for those who value meeting the actual makers and tasting spirits that reflect their specific place and approach.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule visits since they operate with limited hours and Paul needs to balance distilling duties with hosting guests. The facility is easy to find on St. Andrews Drive with adequate parking. Ask about their barrel aging experiments and how they’re adapting traditional whiskey-making to Oregon’s unique climate conditions. If you’re interested in purchasing bottles, they typically have their current releases available on-site. The best time to visit is when Paul can walk you through active distillation, so inquire about production schedules when booking.
