ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Nevada's First Legal Distillery Since Prohibition

Nevada H&C Distilling Company sits in a 15,000-square-foot industrial space on West Mesquite Avenue, about ten minutes from the Strip but worlds away from the casino glitz. Founded in 2014 by husband-and-wife team Harold and Carol Burr (the H&C in the name), this operation grew from Harold’s 20-year hobby of home distilling into Nevada’s first craft distillery since Prohibition. Harold, a former aerospace engineer, and Carol, who handled the business side while working in hospitality, spent three years navigating Nevada’s liquor laws to get their federal and state permits. They opened their doors in 2017, making everything from vodka to whiskey in small batches using a custom 500-gallon copper still they had shipped from Germany. The facility doubles as both production space and tasting room, with exposed brick walls, concrete floors, and the constant hum of fermentation tanks creating an industrial-meets-craft atmosphere. You’ll find them making vodka, gin, bourbon, and rye whiskey, plus seasonal spirits that change based on what ingredients they can source locally.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Desert Climate Aging Changes Everything

This is Nevada’s first legal distillery since Prohibition ended, which makes it historically significant for the state’s spirits industry. Harold’s aerospace engineering background shows up in their precision approach to distilling – they monitor fermentation temperatures to the degree and track every batch with scientific detail most craft distilleries don’t bother with. The German copper still is custom-designed with extra plates for maximum flavor control, and they’re one of the few distilleries using Nevada-grown grains when available. The desert climate actually works in their favor for aging – the extreme temperature swings accelerate the aging process, so their two-year bourbon tastes closer to a four-year from more temperate regions.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Industrial Space Where Science Meets Craft

Harold usually leads tours himself, walking you through the fermentation room where you can smell the sweet corn mash, then over to the gleaming copper still that dominates the production floor. The space feels more like a working lab than a polished tourist destination – you’ll see grain bags stacked in corners and bottles being labeled by hand. Carol handles most tastings, pouring four half-ounce samples while explaining how the desert aging affects each spirit differently. The whole experience takes about 45 minutes and feels intimate – you’re not part of a crowd, you’re getting a genuine behind-the-scenes look at how two people built something from scratch.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real People Making Real Spirits

If you’re into the craft distilling process and want to meet the actual people making the spirits, absolutely yes. This isn’t a slick tourist operation with gift shops and fancy cocktail programs – it’s a working distillery where the founders are hands-on every day. Serious spirits enthusiasts will appreciate Harold’s technical knowledge and the chance to taste spirits aged in Nevada’s unique climate. Skip it if you’re looking for Instagram moments or expecting a polished visitor center experience. The spirits are solid but still developing, so don’t expect award-winning bourbon yet. It’s better suited for people who enjoy seeing entrepreneurship in action rather than those wanting a refined tasting room experience.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead – they don’t always answer emails promptly and tours depend on production schedules. Harold’s usually there Wednesday through Saturday, and he’s the best tour guide since it’s his operation. The address can confuse GPS systems, so look for the industrial complex with the big Nevada Distilling sign rather than relying on the building number. Park in the lot out front – it’s free and usually has plenty of space. Ask about their barrel aging program if you’re interested in buying a whole barrel; they’ll age custom barrels for serious collectors. Don’t expect fancy cocktails – they’ll pour their spirits neat or with simple mixers, but that’s actually better for tasting the true character of what they’re making.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Nevada H&C Distilling Company — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation?
Yes, definitely call ahead. Harold and Carol run the operation themselves, so tours depend on production schedules and they’re not always available for walk-ins. They prefer to give advance notice so they can plan around distilling activities.
How does desert aging affect the whiskey?
Nevada’s extreme temperature swings accelerate the aging process significantly. The whiskey expands and contracts in the barrels more than it would in steady climates, which means their two-year bourbon develops flavors similar to four-year whiskeys from other regions.
Can I buy bottles to take home?
Yes, they sell bottles on-site of all their spirits. Prices are reasonable for craft distillery standards, and you’re buying directly from the makers. They also offer custom barrel programs for serious collectors who want their own aged whiskey.
