MurLarkey Distilled Spirits sits in an industrial complex in Manassas, Virginia, where founders Jim Heaney and Robert Cassell turned their shared passion for craft spirits into reality in 2014. Heaney, a former federal contractor, and Cassell, who had a background in business development, started the operation in a 6,000-square-foot facility after years of planning and navigating Virginia’s evolving craft distillery laws. The name “MurLarkey” comes from an old Irish term meaning “nonsense” or “foolishness” – a tongue-in-cheek reference to friends who thought they were crazy for starting a distillery. They produce bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, gin, and rum using a 500-gallon copper still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works.
The journey began when both founders were home distillers who decided to go legitimate after Virginia passed more favorable craft distillery legislation. They spent three years getting permits, finding the right location, and convincing banks that two guys with no commercial distilling experience could make it work. Their master distiller credentials came from intensive research, visiting other distilleries, and learning from industry veterans. The operation focuses on small-batch production with careful attention to each step of the process.
Visitors find a no-frills production facility that prioritizes substance over flash. The tasting room has a casual, educational atmosphere where you can see the stills and barrels while sampling spirits. Tours give you an up-close look at their mash tuns, fermenters, and aging room, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions about the process. It’s the kind of place where the founders might be running the tour themselves, sharing stories about early mistakes and hard-won lessons.
