ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Montana Grain-to-Glass In a Converted Warehouse

Mountain Wave Distilling sits in Black Eagle, Montana, about ten minutes northeast of Great Falls, in a converted industrial building that feels more like a neighborhood hangout than a typical distillery. Founded in 2016 by husband-and-wife team Jason and Jenn Hevelone, this operation started as a dream Jason harbored for years while working in technology. The couple spent two years researching, planning, and navigating Montana’s distilling regulations before opening their doors. They produce vodka, gin, and whiskey in small batches using a 500-gallon copper still they named “Big Bertha,” focusing on spirits that reflect Montana’s agricultural heritage. The 3,000-square-foot facility houses everything from fermentation to bottling, with most of the magic happening in full view of visitors. Jason handles the distilling while Jenn manages operations and the tasting room, creating a genuinely personal experience where you’re likely to meet the people who made your drink. Their approach centers on using Montana-grown grains whenever possible and letting the raw materials speak for themselves rather than chasing trendy flavor profiles.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Wheat from 150 Miles Away Distilled Right Here

Mountain Wave stands out for being one of the few grain-to-glass distilleries in central Montana, sourcing winter wheat and other grains directly from farms within 150 miles of the facility. Jason’s background in technology shows up in his methodical approach to fermentation and distillation—he tracks every variable and maintains detailed logs that would make a data scientist proud. The distillery’s location in Black Eagle, a small industrial town rather than a tourist destination, gives it an authentic working-class vibe that’s refreshing compared to more polished operations. They’ve also committed to aging their whiskey on-site rather than sourcing, meaning everything in their bottles went through their still, which is increasingly rare for newer distilleries looking to get products to market quickly.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers Not a Marketing Team

You’ll walk into a compact tasting room that opens directly onto the production floor, so the smell of mash and the sound of the still are part of the ambiance. Jason or Jenn usually handle tastings personally, walking you through their current lineup while explaining their production process in detail—no scripted tours here, just genuine conversation about what they’re making and why. The space feels like visiting someone’s really well-equipped garage, complete with metal stools, industrial lighting, and Big Bertha dominating the room. Tastings typically include their vodka, gin, and whatever whiskey they have ready, with honest commentary about what’s working and what they’re still perfecting. The experience is intimate—you might be the only visitor, or there might be two other people—and you’ll leave knowing more about grain selection and fermentation than you expected.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Distilling No Tourist Polish

If you’re looking for Instagram-worthy mountain views and polished hospitality, this isn’t your spot. But if you want to meet the actual people making the spirits and see small-batch distilling in action, Mountain Wave delivers something increasingly hard to find—authenticity. The whiskey is still young since they’re only a few years into aging, so set your expectations accordingly. This appeals most to spirits enthusiasts who appreciate the craft over the marketing, locals who want to support Montana agriculture, and anyone who prefers learning about production over sipping in a fancy tasting room. You won’t find tour buses or bachelorette parties here, which is exactly the point.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead—seriously. They’re a two-person operation, and Jason might be in the middle of a distillation run when you show up. The location can be tricky to find since it’s in an industrial area, so use GPS and look for the small Mountain Wave sign on the building. Weekend afternoons tend to work best for casual visits, but they’re flexible if you reach out in advance. Ask Jason about his grain sourcing—he loves talking about the local farmers he works with and the differences between wheat varieties. Don’t expect a long, formal tasting; this is more like hanging out with knowledgeable friends who happen to make spirits. Bring cash for bottle purchases since they don’t always have card processing set up.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Mountain Wave Distilling — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make an appointment?
Yes, definitely call ahead. Jason and Jenn run the operation themselves, so they might be in the middle of distilling or bottling when you arrive. They’re happy to accommodate visitors but need a heads up to make sure someone’s available for tastings.
How long has their whiskey been aging?
Since they opened in 2016, their oldest whiskey is still relatively young. They’re committed to aging everything on-site rather than sourcing older stock, so patience is part of the experience. Ask Jason about their aging philosophy—he’s excited about what’s coming in future years.
Can I see the production process during my visit?
Absolutely. The distilling equipment is right there in the same space as the tasting room, and Jason loves explaining how everything works. If you’re lucky enough to visit during a distillation run, you’ll get to see Big Bertha in action.
