ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Two-Person Operation That Makes Every Drop Count

Moon Drops Distillery sits on West Broadway Street in Fortville, Indiana, a small town about 20 miles northeast of Indianapolis. Founded by husband-and-wife team Mike and Amy Droste, this craft distillery opened its doors in 2019 after years of planning and navigating local regulations. Mike, a former engineering manager, and Amy, who worked in healthcare administration, decided to pursue their passion for craft spirits after years of home distilling as a hobby. The operation runs out of a converted commercial building that they’ve transformed into a working distillery and tasting room, complete with custom copper stills and fermentation tanks. They focus primarily on bourbon, rye whiskey, and flavored moonshine, with all production happening on-site using traditional methods combined with Mike’s engineering precision. The Drostes handle most operations themselves, from mashing and distilling to bottling and running tastings, giving visitors a genuine small-batch experience where you’re likely to meet the actual distillers.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Meet the Actual Distillers Not Their Marketing Team

What sets Moon Drops apart is the personal touch you get from dealing directly with the founders throughout your visit. Mike’s engineering background shows in the precise temperature controls and detailed fermentation monitoring, while Amy’s attention to customer experience creates a welcoming atmosphere that feels more like visiting friends than touring a commercial operation. They’re one of the few distilleries in the area where the actual owners are hands-on in every aspect of production, from selecting grains to personally conducting most tastings and tours.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Distillery Tours From the People Who Built It

When you visit Moon Drops, you’re walking into what feels like a working garage where serious distilling happens. The space has that authentic craft distillery vibe with exposed brick walls, concrete floors, and the sweet smell of fermenting grain in the air. Mike or Amy typically handle tours personally, walking you through their production process from grain to bottle while sharing stories about their journey from corporate careers to craft distilling. The tasting room occupies one corner of the production space, so you’re literally surrounded by the working distillery while sampling their spirits.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Distilling Worth the Drive

If you appreciate genuine craft distilling and want to support a true mom-and-pop operation, Moon Drops delivers an authentic experience you won’t find at larger distilleries. You’re not getting polished corporate tours here—instead, you get real stories from people who took a leap of faith to follow their passion. It’s perfect for bourbon enthusiasts who want to understand the actual craft behind small-batch distilling, though visitors expecting elaborate facilities or extensive cocktail menus might find it too bare-bones.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page before visiting, as hours can vary based on production schedules and the fact that it’s a two-person operation. The distillery is located in a small commercial area that’s easy to miss, so use GPS and look for the Moon Drops sign. Parking is available in front of the building. Ask Mike about his engineering approach to distilling if you want to geek out over the technical aspects, and don’t miss trying their flavored moonshines if you’re curious about their creative side.
