ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Montana's First Legal Distillery Since Prohibition

Montana Whiskey Co. sits in a converted warehouse on South 2nd Street in Missoula, where founders Tyler Jorgenson and Ryan Koenig opened their doors in 2015. These aren’t your typical distillery guys—Jorgenson came from the tech world, and Koenig brings a background in construction. They started with a 26-gallon copper still and a vision to create Montana’s first legal whiskey distillery since Prohibition. The 3,000-square-foot space feels more like an industrial workshop than a polished tasting room, which honestly fits the scrappy Montana vibe perfectly. They’re producing bourbon, rye whiskey, and vodka using Montana grains and Rocky Mountain water. The operation started small but they’ve steadily expanded their production capacity while keeping that bootstrap mentality that got them started. What began as weekend experiments in Jorgenson’s garage has evolved into a legitimate craft distillery that’s putting Montana on the whiskey map.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Bootstrap Whiskey Made From Montana Grain

This is Montana’s first legal whiskey distillery since Prohibition ended, which makes it a genuine piece of state history in the making. The founders bootstrap approach shows everywhere—they built much of their equipment themselves and learned distilling through trial and error rather than formal training. They’re using 100% Montana grains, including wheat from the Judith Basin and corn from local farms, creating spirits that genuinely reflect their terroir. The high altitude and dry Montana climate affects their aging process differently than traditional bourbon regions, creating unique flavor profiles you won’t find elsewhere.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Polish Required Just Pure Craft

You’ll walk into what feels like a working garage more than a polished visitor center, and that’s exactly the point. Tours are casual affairs where Tyler or Ryan walk you through their handbuilt setup, explaining how they jerry-rigged solutions and learned from mistakes along the way. The copper still dominates the small space, and you can usually smell the mash cooking or catch the sound of fermentation bubbling away. Tastings happen right at a simple bar setup where they’ll pour samples of their bourbon and rye while telling stories about the early days of figuring everything out through YouTube videos and pure determination.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Pioneers Making Genuine History

If you’re looking for polished tours with scripted presentations, this isn’t your spot. But if you want to see craft distilling in its purest form—two guys who taught themselves to make whiskey and built something from nothing—Montana Whiskey Co. delivers an authentic experience you won’t find at bigger operations. Whiskey geeks will appreciate tasting spirits that genuinely taste different because of Montana’s climate and ingredients. It’s perfect for anyone who likes underdog stories and wants to support true craft distilling pioneers.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before showing up since they’re still a small operation and tours depend on production schedules. Ask Tyler or Ryan about their early disasters and learning experiences—they’re refreshingly honest about the mistakes they made along the way. Try their bourbon alongside their rye to taste how Montana grains create different flavor profiles. The space gets tight with more than six people, so smaller groups work better. Don’t expect fancy packaging or gift shop frills, but do expect to leave with bottles you can’t find anywhere else.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Montana Whiskey Co. — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to book a tour in advance?
Yes, definitely call ahead since Tyler and Ryan are often focused on production and tours depend on their schedule. They’re a small operation without dedicated tour staff, so advance notice helps ensure someone’s available to show you around.
What makes Montana whiskey different from bourbon made elsewhere?
The high altitude and dry Montana climate affects aging differently than traditional bourbon regions, plus they’re using 100% Montana grains including wheat from the Judith Basin. The result is flavor profiles you won’t find in Kentucky or Tennessee whiskeys.
Can I buy bottles that aren’t available in stores?
Yes, they sell their full lineup on-site including bottles that have limited distribution outside Montana. It’s often the only place to try their newest batches before they hit even local liquor stores.
