Minden Mill Distilling sits in the historic Dangberg Home Ranch area of Minden, Nevada, housed in what was once part of the Carson Valley’s agricultural heritage. Founded by Gary Hinds, a longtime Nevada resident with a background in construction and business, the distillery opened its doors in 2017 after several years of planning and navigating local regulations. The operation focuses on small-batch whiskey and bourbon production, utilizing traditional copper pot stills in a converted warehouse space that maintains some of the area’s rustic ranch character.
Hinds didn’t come to distilling through the typical route—he was drawn to the craft after years of home brewing and a fascination with the science behind fermentation and distillation. The transition from construction work to craft distilling meant learning everything from grain sourcing to barrel aging, often through trial and plenty of error. The distillery’s location in Carson Valley provides access to Sierra Nevada mountain water and positions it as one of the few craft distilleries in this part of Nevada, where the high desert climate creates unique aging conditions.
Visitors find a no-frills operation that’s more focused on the craft than the show. The tasting room has a straightforward setup where you can sample their developing lineup of spirits while learning about their process directly from Hinds or his small team. The space feels more like a working distillery that happens to welcome visitors rather than a polished tourist destination, which appeals to folks genuinely interested in how whiskey gets made rather than just where to get a good photo.
