ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Downtown Craft Distilling In Hagerstown's Heart

Meinelschmidt Distillery sits in downtown Hagerstown on South Potomac Street, bringing small-batch spirits to Maryland’s western panhandle. Founded by Dave Meinelschmidt, a former engineer who traded his corporate career for copper stills and grain bills, the distillery opened its doors after years of perfecting recipes in his garage. The operation runs out of a renovated building that houses both production equipment and a tasting room where visitors can sample everything from vodka to whiskey. You’ll find this is very much a hands-on operation where Dave often greets visitors personally, sharing stories about the transition from weekend hobby to full-time passion. The distillery focuses on quality over quantity, with small batches that allow for experimentation and attention to detail. What started as a retirement project has evolved into a genuine craft distillery that’s become part of Hagerstown’s growing downtown revitalization.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Meet the Engineer Turned Master Distiller

This is one of the few distilleries where you’ll likely meet the actual founder and head distiller during your visit. Dave Meinelschmidt’s engineering background shows up in his methodical approach to distillation and his willingness to experiment with different techniques and recipes. The distillery operates on a truly small scale, which means they can pivot quickly to try new products or adjust existing ones based on what works. Being located in downtown Hagerstown also sets it apart from many rural distilleries – you can walk to restaurants and shops before or after your visit.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Corporate Polish Just Real Craft

You’ll step into a compact space where production and tasting happen under the same roof. The atmosphere is casual and educational, with Dave or his team explaining the distillation process and the story behind each spirit. Tastings happen at a small bar area where you can sample their current lineup while watching the stills in action. Don’t expect a polished corporate experience – this feels more like visiting a friend’s really well-equipped garage distillery that happened to go professional. The tours are informal and interactive, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions about the process.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Spirit Stories Worth the Stop

If you appreciate meeting the actual people behind the spirits and learning about small-scale distillation, absolutely. This isn’t the place for elaborate tours or fancy gift shops, but it’s perfect for spirit enthusiasts who want an authentic, unvarnished look at craft distilling. The personal interaction with Dave makes it memorable, and you’ll leave understanding more about the actual work that goes into making spirits. It’s especially worth it if you’re already exploring downtown Hagerstown or passing through the area.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before visiting since hours can vary based on production schedules. The space is small, so groups larger than four or five might feel cramped. Ask Dave about his engineering background and how it influences his distilling approach – he’s got great stories. If you’re interested in the technical side of distillation, this is your chance to get detailed answers from someone who genuinely loves explaining the process. Parking is typical downtown street parking.
