Marlin & Barrel Distillery sits on South 8th Street in historic downtown Fernandina Beach, bringing craft spirits to Florida’s northernmost barrier island. Founded by husband-and-wife team Michael and Jennifer Horan, the distillery opened in 2018 after years of planning and navigating Florida’s complex distilling regulations. Michael, who spent decades in the restaurant industry, partnered with Jennifer to create something entirely different for Amelia Island’s growing tourism scene. They produce vodka, rum, and whiskey in small batches using a custom-built 500-gallon copper still that arrived from Kentucky just before their grand opening.
The Horans didn’t stumble into distilling by accident. Michael’s background running restaurants gave him an appreciation for quality ingredients and consistent processes, skills that translate perfectly to spirit production. They spent two years perfecting recipes and learning the regulatory maze before committing to the brick-and-mortar location. The building itself reflects Fernandina Beach’s maritime character, with weathered wood and nautical touches that feel authentic rather than themed. Jennifer handles much of the business operations while Michael focuses on production, creating a genuine partnership that visitors notice immediately.
The distillery operates as both production facility and tasting room, letting you watch the process while sampling finished products. You’re not getting a massive industrial operation here—this is craft distilling at its most intimate scale. The atmosphere strikes that sweet spot between professional and welcoming, where you can learn about distillation techniques without feeling like you’re in a chemistry class. Most visitors leave with bottles and a genuine understanding of what small-batch distilling actually means.
