ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Downtown Distillery That Serves Real Dinner

Loon Liquors sits on 5th Street West in downtown Northfield, Minnesota, combining craft distilling with wood-fired pizza in a unique dual-concept space. Founded by Andy Nelson, a former beer industry veteran who spent years perfecting his distilling craft before opening in 2017, the operation reflects his vision of creating a community gathering place centered around handcrafted spirits. The distillery occupies a converted downtown building where Nelson installed custom copper stills and built out both production space and a pizzeria that uses locally sourced ingredients. They produce vodka, gin, and whiskey using Minnesota-grown grains, with their spirits earning recognition throughout the Twin Cities metro area. What started as Nelson’s passion project after leaving the beer industry has evolved into Northfield’s first craft distillery, drawing visitors who come for both the spirits and the authentic Neapolitan-style pizzas. The combination isn’t accidental – Nelson designed the space so guests could watch spirits being made while enjoying food that pairs naturally with craft cocktails.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Wood-Fired Pizza Meets Minnesota Spirits

The distillery-pizzeria combination sets Loon Liquors apart from typical tasting room experiences, creating a genuine restaurant atmosphere where spirits complement a full dining experience rather than just offering token snacks. Nelson’s background in beer production brings a different perspective to distilling, emphasizing clean flavors and precise technique that shows in their vodka and gin quality. Their location in historic downtown Northfield gives them access to the college town energy from nearby Carleton and St. Olaf, while the wood-fired pizza ovens create an authentic Italian atmosphere that feels worlds away from standard industrial distillery tours.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Watch Stills Work While You Actually Eat

You’ll enter a warm space where the copper stills are visible from the dining area, creating an open production atmosphere that lets you watch the distilling process while you eat. The wood-fired pizza ovens dominate one side of the room, filling the space with smoky aromas that mix with the subtle scents of fermenting grain. Nelson or his staff are usually around to talk about the distilling process, and they’re genuinely enthusiastic about explaining how they source local grains and develop their recipes. The pizza menu focuses on Neapolitan-style pies with creative toppings, and the cocktail menu naturally features house spirits in well-crafted drinks that show off their vodka and gin.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Date Night Spot That Happens to Distill

This works best for people who want a full evening out rather than just a quick tasting – you’re coming for dinner and drinks, not a formal distillery tour. The combination appeals to couples looking for date night spots and groups who want something more substantial than typical distillery snacks. If you’re a spirits purist focused solely on production tours and barrel warehouses, this might feel too restaurant-focused for your interests. But if you appreciate seeing craft spirits integrated into actual food culture rather than isolated in tasting rooms, Loon Liquors delivers something genuinely different in the Minnesota distillery scene.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media for current hours since they operate more like a restaurant than a standard distillery tasting room. The pizza takes time since it’s made to order in wood-fired ovens, so plan for a leisurely visit rather than a quick stop. Try their house cocktails to really taste how their spirits work in mixed drinks – their gin especially shines in proper cocktails. Parking is typical downtown street parking, so arrive with a few extra minutes to find a spot. The space fills up on weekend evenings, especially when Carleton and St. Olaf are in session, so consider visiting during off-peak times if you want more opportunity to chat with the distilling team.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Loon Liquors Distillery & Pizzeria — Visitor FAQ

Do you offer distillery tours of the production area?
They operate more as a restaurant with visible production rather than offering formal tours. You can see the stills from the dining area and staff will talk about the process, but it’s not a structured tour experience like larger distilleries.
Can I just come for drinks without ordering food?
Yes, you can visit just for cocktails made with their house spirits. The bar area welcomes drinks-only guests, though the full experience really combines their spirits with the wood-fired pizza.
How long does it take to get food since everything is made to order?
Wood-fired pizzas typically take 10-15 minutes once ordered, since they’re made fresh in the ovens. Plan for a relaxed dining pace rather than quick service, especially during busy weekend evenings.
