ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Michigan Grain Meets Honest Craft

Long Road Distillers sits in Grand Rapids’ West Side in a converted warehouse space on Leonard Street, where Kyle VanStrien and Jon O’Connor started crafting spirits in 2013. The pair met through mutual friends and bonded over their shared interest in quality spirits and the idea of building something from scratch in Michigan’s emerging craft distilling scene. Their 4,000-square-foot facility houses custom copper stills and serves as both production space and tasting room, where they focus on whiskey, gin, and vodka using locally-sourced grains when possible. VanStrien handles much of the production side while O’Connor focuses on the business operations, though both are hands-on in every aspect of the operation. They started with a 250-gallon copper pot still and have expanded their equipment over the years to meet growing demand. The name “Long Road” reflects their philosophy about the patience required in distilling – particularly with whiskey, where the real magic happens during aging. They’ve built relationships with local farmers and suppliers, sourcing Michigan wheat and corn for their grain bills. The tasting room has an industrial-meets-rustic feel with exposed brick walls, wooden tables, and views into the production area where visitors can see the stills and barrels. You’ll often find one of the founders or their small team behind the bar, happy to talk about their process and the stories behind each spirit. They’ve built a loyal local following while also attracting visitors from across Michigan who appreciate their straightforward approach to craft distilling without the pretense.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Local Farmers Supply Every Grain

Long Road stands out for its commitment to Michigan agriculture and their transparent approach to the craft. VanStrien and O’Connor source their grains locally when possible, working directly with Michigan farmers to get the wheat and corn that forms the backbone of their spirits. They’re also refreshingly honest about their process – they don’t claim to be doing things that have never been done before, but rather focus on doing traditional distilling well with quality ingredients. Their location in Grand Rapids’ West Side puts them in a neighborhood that’s seen significant revitalization, and they’ve become part of that story rather than trying to manufacture heritage they don’t have.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Flash Just Real Distilling

The tasting room feels like hanging out in a friend’s well-appointed garage workshop – industrial but comfortable, with the hum of production happening just steps away. You’ll typically be served by knowledgeable staff who can walk you through their lineup and explain the differences between their spirits. The space isn’t huge, so it maintains an intimate feel where conversations flow easily between strangers at the bar. You can watch the distilling process through windows that separate the tasting area from production, and the founders are often around to chat about everything from grain sourcing to the challenges of Michigan’s craft distilling regulations. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious – they’re more interested in sharing good spirits than impressing you with elaborate stories.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Experience Without The Polish

If you’re interested in seeing craft distilling without the flash and marketing polish, Long Road delivers an authentic experience. This appeals most to people who want to understand the actual process and taste spirits that reflect careful attention to ingredients and technique rather than flashy packaging. You won’t find elaborate tours or theatrical presentations, but you will get honest conversation about distilling and spirits that stand on their own merit. It’s particularly worthwhile for visitors who appreciate supporting local agriculture and want to see how Michigan grains translate into quality spirits. Skip it if you’re looking for Instagram-worthy experiences or extensive food pairings.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media for current hours and any special events – their schedule can vary with production demands. Parking is available on-site, which is helpful since street parking in that area can be limited. Ask about their whiskey aging process and try their gin if you’re not typically a gin drinker – they’ve won over some converts with their approach. The founders are often around during weekend tastings, so that’s your best bet for getting the full story directly from them. Don’t expect a formal tour structure, but they’re usually happy to show you around the production area if time allows.
