ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

High Desert Craft In Mining Town Heart

Little Toad Creek Brewery & Distillery sits right in the heart of Silver City, New Mexico’s historic downtown district on North Bullard Street. Founded by husband and wife team Dan and Cindy Krempel in 2010, this operation started as a brewery before expanding into distilling in 2013. The building itself has character – it’s housed in a renovated structure that fits perfectly into Silver City’s mining town aesthetic, complete with exposed brick and industrial touches that give it a genuine Southwestern feel. The Krempels didn’t just stumble into this business. Dan’s background in engineering and Cindy’s experience in hospitality created the perfect combination for running a craft operation that actually pays attention to both the science and the customer experience. They started small, learning the ropes with beer production before diving into the more complex world of distilling. The transition wasn’t always smooth – getting the right permits and convincing locals that craft spirits could work in a town known more for its art scene than its drinking culture took some doing. What you’ll find today is a laid-back spot that feels authentically New Mexican without trying too hard. They produce whiskey, vodka, and gin alongside their beer lineup, and the whole operation has this refreshingly unpretentious vibe. The tasting room doubles as a local hangout where you’re just as likely to chat with a regular as you are with a tourist passing through on their way to the Gila Wilderness. It’s not trying to be anything fancy – just good spirits made by people who actually know what they’re doing.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Local Botanicals From Gila Forest

You won’t find another distillery quite like this in New Mexico, mainly because there aren’t that many distilleries period in this part of the state. Little Toad Creek operates at true small-batch scale – we’re talking about a pot still setup that produces maybe a few hundred bottles per batch, not thousands. The high desert location at over 5,000 feet elevation creates some interesting aging conditions that you won’t get in more humid climates. Their gin incorporates local botanicals that actually grow in the surrounding Gila National Forest area, giving it flavors you literally can’t get anywhere else. The fact that they’re still primarily a brewery that happens to distill means the approach is different too – less whiskey mystique, more practical craft beverage making.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Neighborhood Pub Vibes With Craft Spirits

Walking into Little Toad Creek feels more like stepping into your neighborhood pub than a fancy distillery showroom. The space is compact but comfortable, with that authentic Southwest industrial vibe that comes from actually being in a working building rather than a purpose-built tourist destination. You can see the brewing equipment and distilling setup from the tasting area, and on production days you’ll catch the smell of mash or grain cooking. The staff knows their stuff without being pretentious about it – they’ll explain the process if you’re curious, but they won’t lecture you if you just want to try some spirits. Tastings happen right at the bar, and you’ll usually have a chance to try both their distilled spirits and their beers, which gives you a fuller picture of what they’re doing.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Perfect Silver City Authenticity Stop

If you’re in Silver City anyway, absolutely stop by. This isn’t a destination distillery that’ll draw people from across the country, but it’s exactly the kind of authentic local operation that makes exploring craft spirits interesting. Beer lovers will appreciate seeing how the same team approaches both brewing and distilling, and anyone interested in New Mexico’s emerging craft spirits scene should definitely check it out. Don’t expect elaborate tours or fancy gift shops – this is more about trying good locally-made spirits in a relaxed setting. It’s perfect if you want to support a genuine local business and taste something you can’t get elsewhere, but skip it if you’re looking for a polished tourist experience.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before making the trip – hours can be limited and they sometimes close for private events or production. Parking is street parking in downtown Silver City, which is usually fine except during special events. If you’re driving from out of town, note that Silver City is at elevation and the roads can be winding – it’s about an hour northwest of Las Cruces and a bit over two hours from Albuquerque. Try both their spirits and beer if you’re doing a tasting – the comparison is actually pretty interesting. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, so don’t hesitate to ask questions about their process or the local area if you’re visiting from out of state.

How far is Little Toad Creek from major New Mexico cities?
