ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Former Auto Shop Now Makes Nebraska Whiskey

Lazy RW Distillery sits on South Ash Street in Moorefield, a tiny Nebraska town where corn fields stretch to the horizon and craft spirits are a relatively new concept. Founded by Ryan and Wendy (the R and W in the name) who left corporate careers to chase their dream of making authentic American whiskey in the heart of grain country. They opened their doors in 2018 after converting a former auto repair shop into a compact distillery operation. The husband-and-wife team produces bourbon, rye whiskey, and seasonal moonshine using locally sourced Nebraska corn and wheat. What started as weekend hobby distilling in their garage turned into a full-time operation when they realized they could source better grain within 20 miles than most distilleries get shipped from hundreds of miles away. The 2,400-square-foot facility houses a 250-gallon copper still along with fermentation tanks and a small barrel aging room where they’re laying down whiskey for future releases.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Grain from Fields You Drive Past

This is Nebraska farm-to-bottle distilling at its most authentic. Ryan sources corn and wheat directly from three family farms within a 15-mile radius, meaning their grain bill literally comes from the fields you drive past to get there. The “lazy” name isn’t about their work ethic but their philosophy of letting time and Nebraska’s extreme temperature swings do the heavy lifting in aging. Their barrel room experiences wild temperature fluctuations from sub-zero winters to 100-degree summers, which accelerates the aging process and creates unique flavor profiles you won’t find in climate-controlled facilities.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Husband and Wife Tell Their Story

Tours are intimate affairs since the whole operation fits in what used to be two service bays of the old garage. Ryan or Wendy personally walk you through their grain-to-glass process, and you can actually touch the fermentation tanks and get close enough to the still to smell the mash cooking. The tasting happens at a small bar they built from reclaimed barn wood, where you’ll sample their current releases while learning about Nebraska grain farming and small-batch distilling. The space smells like fermenting corn and oak, with classic rock playing softly in the background.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Craft Spirit Without the Polish

If you’re driving through rural Nebraska and appreciate authentic craft spirits stories, absolutely. This isn’t a polished tourist destination with gift shops and fancy architecture, but it’s a genuine look at bootstrap American distilling. Whiskey enthusiasts will appreciate tasting spirits made from grain grown in the surrounding fields, and the personal attention from the owners makes it feel like visiting friends rather than customers. Skip it if you’re looking for elaborate production tours or entertainment beyond good conversation and honest whiskey.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead since they’re often in the fields or handling other farm duties during harvest season. GPS works fine, but look for the small hand-painted sign since the building still looks like an auto shop from the outside. Visit during harvest season if possible to see the direct connection between the surrounding farms and what ends up in your glass. Ask about their barrel aging philosophy and how Nebraska weather affects their whiskey development. Don’t expect fancy cocktails, but do expect to learn something about grain farming you didn’t know before.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Lazy RW Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to call ahead to visit?
Yes, definitely call first. Ryan and Wendy often handle farm work or distillery operations that take them away from the tasting room, and they want to make sure someone’s there to give you proper attention when you visit.
Where exactly do you source your grain?
All their corn and wheat comes from three family farms within 15 miles of the distillery. They’ll show you maps during your visit and explain how the local soil affects the grain’s flavor profile in the finished whiskey.
How does Nebraska weather affect your whiskey aging?
The extreme temperature swings from -20°F winters to 100°F+ summers create rapid expansion and contraction in the barrels, which accelerates aging and extracts different flavors than you’d get in climate-controlled facilities. Their two-year bourbon drinks like four-year whiskey aged elsewhere.
