ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Husband and Wife Operation Along the Allegheny River

Lawrenceville Distilling Co. sits on Allegheny River Boulevard in Verona, just outside Pittsburgh, where founders Michael and Katie Roepke turned their home brewing hobby into a full-scale distillery operation in 2018. The couple spent years perfecting their recipes in their garage before taking the leap into commercial distilling, bringing grain-to-glass bourbon and rye production to the Pittsburgh area. Their facility focuses on small-batch production using traditional copper pot stills and locally sourced grains when possible. Michael handles the distilling operations while Katie manages the business side, creating a true family operation that reflects their commitment to quality over quantity. They source their corn from Pennsylvania farms and age their spirits in 15-gallon barrels, which allows for faster maturation and more hands-on barrel management than larger operations. The distillery produces bourbon, rye whiskey, and seasonal spirits, with each batch carefully monitored throughout the aging process. The tasting room offers visitors a chance to sample their spirits while learning about their process directly from the founders. You’ll often find Michael or Katie behind the bar, eager to share stories about their journey from homebrewers to commercial distillers. The atmosphere is relaxed and educational, with tours that take you through their grain-to-glass process and tastings that highlight the differences between their various expressions.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Fifteen-Gallon Barrels Change Everything

What sets Lawrenceville Distilling apart is their use of 15-gallon barrels instead of the standard 53-gallon barrels most distilleries use. This smaller barrel size increases the surface area to spirit ratio, accelerating the aging process and allowing them to release quality aged spirits faster than traditional methods. The Roepkes can also hand-select and taste individual barrels more easily, giving them precise control over their final products. Their location along the Allegheny River provides natural temperature fluctuations that help with the aging process, and they take advantage of Pennsylvania’s agricultural heritage by sourcing grains locally when possible.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

The Founders Pour Your Tasting Flight

Tours at Lawrenceville Distilling are intimate affairs, usually led by Michael or Katie themselves, giving you direct access to the founders’ knowledge and passion. You’ll walk through their production area where you can see the copper pot stills in action and learn about their mash bill recipes and fermentation process. The highlight is visiting their barrel room where the smaller 15-gallon barrels are aging, and you can smell the angel’s share evaporating. Tastings happen in their cozy tasting room where you’ll sample their current releases while hearing stories about specific batches and their development process. The whole experience feels personal and educational rather than scripted.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Small Batch Magic Worth the Drive

This is perfect for spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the craft distilling process from people who are genuinely passionate about what they’re doing. If you enjoy learning about the technical aspects of distilling and want to taste spirits that are truly small-batch, you’ll appreciate what the Roepkes have built. The intimate setting means you’ll get personal attention and can ask detailed questions about their process. However, if you’re looking for a large-scale operation with extensive food offerings or entertainment, this might feel too small. It’s ideal for couples or small groups who want an educational experience focused on the spirits themselves.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media for hours and availability since they’re a small operation and sometimes close for production days. Ask Michael about the differences between their various barrel ages and how the 15-gallon barrels affect flavor development. If you’re interested in the technical side, visit during production hours when you can see the stills running. Parking is available on-site, but the location on Allegheny River Boulevard can be tricky to find the first time, so use GPS and look for their sign. Consider purchasing bottles on-site since their limited production means they’re not widely distributed in stores.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Lawrenceville Distilling Co. — Visitor FAQ

Why do you use 15-gallon barrels instead of standard size barrels?
The smaller barrels give us more surface area contact between the wood and spirit, which accelerates aging and lets us release quality products sooner. We can also taste and monitor each barrel individually, giving us better control over the final product.
Do I need to make a reservation for tours and tastings?
Yes, we recommend calling ahead since we’re a small operation and sometimes close for production. We want to make sure someone’s here to give you the full experience.
Can I buy bottles to take home?
Absolutely. We sell our spirits on-site, and since we’re not widely distributed, it’s often the best way to get our products. We can tell you about each bottle and what makes it special.
