ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Downtown Knoxville's Working Whiskey Warehouse

Knox Whiskey Works sits in a converted warehouse on Jackson Avenue in downtown Knoxville, bringing craft distilling back to Tennessee’s third-largest city. Founded in 2014 by brothers-in-law Peyton Manning (yes, that Peyton Manning) and longtime friend Mike Smith, along with distiller Chris Fletcher, the operation started with a simple goal: make great whiskey where great whiskey belongs. Fletcher, who cut his teeth at Corsair Distillery in Nashville, handles the production side while the business partners focus on building something that honors Tennessee’s distilling heritage without getting trapped in it. The 8,000-square-foot facility houses a 500-gallon copper pot still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works, the same company that built stills for some of Kentucky’s most famous distilleries. They’re producing bourbon, rye, and white whiskey, with their flagship Knox Bourbon leading the charge. What started as a passion project has evolved into a serious operation—they’ve expanded twice since opening and now distribute across multiple states. The team isn’t trying to reinvent whiskey, just make honest spirits that reflect their corner of East Tennessee. Visitors get a real distillery experience here, not a polished tourist show. You’ll see grain coming in, mash cooking, fermentation happening, and barrels aging. The tasting room feels like what it is—a working distillery that happens to welcome guests. Fletcher or one of his team usually runs tours, and they’re happy to talk about everything from grain bills to barrel char levels. It’s worth the trip if you want to see how craft whiskey actually gets made.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

City Distilling Done Right

Knox Whiskey Works stands out as one of the few distilleries actually located in downtown Knoxville, bringing whiskey production back to a city that was once home to multiple distilleries before Prohibition. Their location puts them in the heart of Tennessee’s third-largest city rather than tucked away in the countryside, making them easily accessible to visitors exploring Knoxville’s brewery and restaurant scene. The Peyton Manning connection is real but not gimmicky—he’s a legitimate partner who believes in the product, not just a celebrity endorsement. Chris Fletcher’s background at Corsair brings serious craft distilling experience, and their decision to focus on traditional Tennessee whiskey styles while using modern craft techniques creates spirits that honor the state’s heritage without copying the big names.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Tourist Show Just Real Whiskey

Tours at Knox Whiskey Works feel authentic because you’re seeing an actual working distillery, not a museum. Chris Fletcher or his production team leads most tours, so you’re getting information from people who actually make the whiskey rather than professional tour guides reading scripts. The warehouse space retains its industrial feel—exposed brick, concrete floors, and the genuine sounds and smells of production happening around you. Tastings include their core lineup plus whatever limited releases or barrel samples they have available, and Fletcher’s happy to dive into technical details if you’re interested. The whole experience takes about an hour, and groups stay small enough that you can actually ask questions and get real answers.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Knoxville's Best Kept Whiskey Secret

If you’re in Knoxville and interested in craft spirits, Knox Whiskey Works delivers exactly what you’d want from a distillery visit—good whiskey and straight talk about how it’s made. The downtown location makes it easy to combine with other Knoxville activities, and the authentic working distillery atmosphere beats the overly polished experiences you get at some larger operations. It’s particularly good for whiskey enthusiasts who want to talk process and technique rather than casual tourists looking for entertainment. The spirits are legitimately well-made, not just novelty purchases, so you’ll leave with bottles you’ll actually want to drink. Don’t expect elaborate food pairings or Instagram-perfect cocktail presentations—this is about the whiskey.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm tour availability since they’re a working distillery and sometimes have to adjust schedules for production needs. The downtown location means street parking or nearby lots, but it’s generally not hard to find a spot except during University of Tennessee game days. Tours typically run on weekends, but they’ll sometimes accommodate weekday visits if you call in advance. Ask Fletcher about their barrel program if you’re interested—they’ve done some interesting single barrel releases that don’t always make it to regular distribution. The tasting room isn’t huge, so larger groups should definitely call ahead. If you’re visiting other Knoxville breweries or restaurants, Knox Whiskey Works fits easily into a downtown walking tour.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Knox Whiskey Works — Visitor FAQ

Is Peyton Manning really involved or just a celebrity endorsement?
Manning is a legitimate business partner who invested in the distillery from the beginning, not just a paid spokesperson. While he’s not involved in day-to-day operations, he’s genuinely invested in the company’s success and occasionally visits the facility.
Do I need to book tours in advance?
Yes, calling ahead is essential since they’re a working distillery with production schedules that can affect tour availability. Weekend tours are most common, but weekday visits are sometimes possible with advance notice.
How does Knox Whiskey compare to other Tennessee whiskeys?
Knox focuses on traditional Tennessee bourbon and rye styles without the Lincoln County Process (charcoal filtering) used by Jack Daniel’s. Their craft scale allows for more experimentation with barrel selections and limited releases than the major Tennessee brands typically offer.
