Knowlton House Distillery sits on a sprawling property along County Road DB in rural Mosinee, Wisconsin, where the Knowlton family has been crafting small-batch spirits since 2015. Founded by husband and wife team Dave and Cathy Knowlton, this farm distillery operates out of a converted barn on their family property, combining traditional distilling methods with modern equipment to produce vodka, gin, and whiskey. The operation started as a retirement project for Dave, a former engineer who became fascinated with distillation after visiting craft distilleries throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The Knowltons built their distillery from the ground up, installing a custom copper pot still and focusing on using local ingredients whenever possible. Dave handles the distillation process while Cathy manages the business side and customer relations, creating a true family operation that reflects their commitment to quality over quantity. They source corn from local farmers and use Wisconsin water in their mash, emphasizing their connection to the local agricultural community. The distillery officially opened its doors to visitors in 2016, becoming one of the few farm distilleries in central Wisconsin.
Visitors to Knowlton House experience an authentic farm distillery atmosphere, where you’re likely to be greeted by Dave or Cathy personally. The tasting room occupies part of the converted barn, with exposed wooden beams and a rustic aesthetic that reflects the agricultural setting. You can see the production equipment up close, and tours often include detailed explanations of their grain-to-glass process. The intimate scale means each visit feels personal, and the Knowltons are known for taking time to explain their craft and share stories about building the distillery from scratch.
