ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Kennay Farms Distilling sits on a working farm along the Lincoln Highway in Rochelle, Illinois, about 80 miles west of Chicago. Founded by Ken and Kay Hjorth (hence the name Kennay), this farm-to-bottle operation opened its doors in 2017 after the couple decided to diversify their century-old family farm. Ken brings decades of farming experience to the grain selection process, while Kay handles the business side and visitor experience. They produce bourbon, rye whiskey, and vodka using corn grown right on their 400-acre property. The Hjorths didn’t stumble into distilling by accident. After years of raising corn and soybeans, they watched grain prices fluctuate and realized they could add more value by turning their corn into spirits rather than just selling it as commodity grain. Ken spent two years learning the craft before they invested in their copper still setup. The distillery operates out of a converted barn on the property, maintaining that authentic farm atmosphere while housing modern distilling equipment. Their master distiller background comes from Ken’s methodical farming approach combined with formal training at distilling workshops. Visitors get the full farm experience here. You’re not just touring a production facility, you’re walking through the fields where the grain grows before it becomes whiskey. The tasting room overlooks the farmland, and during harvest season you might see the actual corn being brought in that’ll become next year’s bourbon. It’s a genuine grain-to-glass operation where you can literally see the entire process from seed to bottle, something most distilleries can’t offer.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

The grain-to-glass aspect here isn’t marketing speak—it’s literal. Ken grows the corn that becomes their bourbon right outside the distillery doors, giving them complete control over the entire production chain from planting to bottling. This farm-based approach means they can select specific corn varieties for flavor profiles rather than buying commodity grain. The location on the historic Lincoln Highway adds another layer, as this route was America’s first transcontinental highway. They’re also one of the few Illinois distilleries operating on an active farm, so the agricultural setting is authentic rather than aesthetic.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Kay typically handles tastings and tours, bringing that Midwest hospitality you’d expect from actual farmers. The converted barn setting feels genuinely rustic without being artificial—exposed beams, concrete floors, and the scent of aging grain in the air. Tours include walking through the production area where you can see their copper still setup and barrel aging room. During growing season, you’ll often get a view of the cornfields that supply their grain. Tastings happen in their small tasting room with farm views, and Kay’s usually happy to explain the farming side of things alongside the distilling process.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

This appeals most to people who appreciate the agricultural side of whiskey making and want something more authentic than typical industrial distillery tours. If you’re driving through northern Illinois or making a Chicago-area distillery tour, it’s worth the detour for the genuine farm-to-bottle story. Don’t expect elaborate cocktail menus or fancy food pairings—this is about understanding where whiskey actually starts. The experience feels personal since you’re often talking directly with the owners rather than hired tour guides. It’s better for whiskey enthusiasts who want to understand grain selection and farming’s role in flavor than casual tourists looking for entertainment.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead since this is a small operation and Kay handles most visitor interactions personally. GPS should get you there, but you’re definitely driving through farmland so don’t expect urban landmarks. Spring through fall offers the best experience when you can see the crops growing. Ask about their grain selection process—Ken’s farming background gives him insights most distillers don’t have. If you’re interested in the agricultural side, time your visit during planting or harvest season for the full picture. Parking is easy since you’re on a farm, just follow their signs from the main road.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Kennay Farms Distilling — Visitor FAQ

Do you really grow all your own grain?
Yes, Ken grows the corn used in their bourbon and vodka right on the farm property. They’re one of the few distilleries that can literally show you the fields where next year’s whiskey is currently growing. The rye comes from local sources when they don’t grow it themselves.
How far in advance should I book a visit?
Since Kay handles most visitor interactions personally and this is an active farm operation, calling a few days ahead is recommended. They’re more flexible than big commercial distilleries but need to coordinate around farming schedules.
What’s the best time of year to visit?
Spring through fall gives you the full farm experience when crops are growing. Harvest season in early fall is particularly interesting since you might see the actual corn being brought in that will become future batches of bourbon.
