ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Industrial Space That Makes Exceptional Spirits

Jersey Spirits operates out of a shared production facility in Fairfield, New Jersey, where founder and head distiller Mike Rigatti has been quietly crafting small-batch spirits since 2013. What started as a home distilling hobby turned into a legitimate operation when Rigatti, who spent years in the pharmaceutical industry, decided to apply his chemistry background to something more enjoyable than drug manufacturing. The distillery operates from Building 7 of an industrial complex on Bloomfield Avenue, sharing space with other craft producers in what’s become a little hub of New Jersey artisans. Jersey Spirits focuses primarily on vodka and gin production, using a custom copper still that Rigatti assembled himself from components sourced across the country. The operation is decidedly hands-on, with Rigatti handling everything from mashing to bottling, often with help from family members who’ve been pulled into the business over the years. The philosophy here is straightforward: make clean, well-crafted spirits without the pretense that sometimes comes with craft distilling. You won’t find elaborate marketing stories about ancient family recipes, just solid technique applied to quality ingredients sourced from reliable suppliers across the region.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Chemistry Meets Craft In New Jersey

Jersey Spirits stands out for its no-nonsense approach to craft distilling in a state where small distilleries face significant regulatory hurdles. Rigatti’s pharmaceutical background shows in his attention to consistency and precision – he approaches each batch like a controlled experiment, keeping detailed logs of temperatures, timing, and ingredient variations. The distillery’s location in a shared industrial facility rather than a tourist-friendly barn or historic building reflects this practical approach. They’re one of the few New Jersey distilleries that actually focuses on perfecting their base spirits rather than rushing into flavored products or trying to be everything to everyone. The copper still setup is entirely custom, designed specifically for the types of spirits they produce, and Rigatti has modified it several times over the years as he’s refined his processes.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Theater Here Just Real Distilling

Visits to Jersey Spirits are by appointment only, and the experience is more like touring a working laboratory than a polished visitor center. You’ll meet directly with Rigatti, who explains his process while walking you through the compact production space, which smells of botanicals and clean alcohol. The industrial setting won’t win any Instagram contests, but you get an authentic look at small-scale distilling without the theatrical elements some craft distilleries add for tourists. Tastings happen right at a small table near the still, where Rigatti pours samples directly from bottles he pulls off nearby shelves. The conversation tends to focus on technique and ingredients rather than romantic origin stories, and you’ll likely learn more about the actual distilling process here than at larger operations with scripted tours.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

For Serious Spirits Fans Absolutely Worth It

This appeals most to spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the technical side of distilling rather than casual tourists looking for entertainment. You’ll get genuine insight into small-batch production and can have detailed conversations about everything from botanicals to fermentation science. If you’re expecting polished facilities, gift shops, or elaborate cocktail experiences, you’ll be disappointed. The value here is in the authenticity and the chance to taste spirits that aren’t widely distributed, plus the opportunity to talk shop with someone who really knows the craft. It’s particularly worthwhile for anyone considering getting into distilling themselves, as Rigatti is generous with technical advice and honest about the challenges of running a small distillery in New Jersey.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead rather than trying to book online – Rigatti prefers to coordinate visits personally and can be flexible with timing if you’re coming from out of state. The facility can be tricky to find since it’s in an industrial complex, so get specific directions when you call and look for Building 7 rather than just the address. Weekday visits often work better than weekends since that’s when active production happens, and you’re more likely to see the still in operation. Ask about trying their gin neat before mixing it – Rigatti designed it to be smooth enough to sip straight, which is unusual for most craft gins. Don’t expect to buy a wide selection of merchandise, but they do sell bottles of their current production runs when available.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Jersey Spirits — Visitor FAQ

How do I schedule a visit to Jersey Spirits?
Call directly to schedule – Rigatti handles appointments personally and can work around your schedule better than an online booking system. He’s usually available weekday afternoons and some weekends, but production schedules can affect availability.
What should I expect from the tasting experience?
It’s educational rather than entertainment-focused – you’ll taste current production while learning about the distillation process. Rigatti explains his choices for each spirit and is happy to answer technical questions. The setting is casual and the portions are generous.
Can I buy bottles to take home?
Yes, when available – production runs are small so selection varies depending on what’s been bottled recently. Prices are reasonable for craft spirits, and you’ll be buying directly from the maker. Cash or check preferred, though card payment may be available.
