ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Historic Niles Building That Houses Serious Spirits

Iron Shoe Distillery sits in downtown Niles, Michigan, in a restored historic building on North 3rd Street that dates back to the early 1900s. Founded by husband-and-wife team Rob and Lisa Dickerson in 2016, the distillery emerged from Rob’s longtime fascination with craft spirits and Lisa’s business acumen from her corporate finance background. The couple spent two years renovating their brick-and-mortar space, installing custom copper stills and creating a production facility that doubles as a welcoming tasting room. They focus on small-batch whiskeys, vodka, and seasonal spirits using locally-sourced Michigan grains whenever possible. The Dickersons’ journey into distilling started as a hobby that got serious fast. Rob, a former engineer, became obsessed with the science of fermentation and distillation after visiting Kentucky bourbon distilleries in the early 2010s. Lisa handled the business planning and regulatory maze while Rob perfected recipes in their garage. Getting city approval and state licensing took longer than expected, but they finally opened their doors in late 2016. Their master distiller background comes from extensive study with industry mentors and hands-on learning during the startup phase. The philosophy centers on patience and precision—they’d rather make less and get it right than rush products to market. Visitors walk into a cozy space that blends industrial elements with warm wood accents, where you can see the copper stills through large windows separating the production area from the tasting room. The atmosphere feels more like a neighborhood gathering spot than a formal distillery, with local artwork on the walls and bartenders who genuinely know their craft. Tours let you get up close with the 250-gallon copper pot still and learn about their grain-to-glass process, while tastings showcase their evolving lineup of spirits. What makes it worth the trip is the personal attention—Rob or Lisa often pour tastings themselves and explain their approach to each spirit.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

True Grain to Glass From Michigan Farms

Iron Shoe stands out as one of the few true grain-to-glass operations in southwestern Michigan, sourcing corn and wheat from farms within a 50-mile radius of the distillery. Their 250-gallon copper pot still was custom-designed by Rob Dickerson himself, incorporating engineering modifications that allow for more precise temperature control during distillation. The building’s history adds character—it housed various businesses over the decades before the Dickersons transformed it into a distillery, preserving original brick walls and hardwood floors. Unlike many craft distilleries that start with neutral grain spirits, Iron Shoe ferments and distills everything on-site, giving them complete control over flavor profiles from start to finish.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Personal Attention From The Founders Themselves

You’ll walk into a compact but thoughtfully designed space where the production area is visible through large windows, letting you watch the distillation process if you time it right. Rob or one of the knowledgeable staff members leads tastings at the main bar, explaining the story behind each spirit and the technical details that make them unique. The 30-minute tours include a close look at the custom copper still, fermentation tanks, and aging barrels, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions about the grain-to-glass process. The space feels intimate rather than overwhelming, with room for maybe 20 people comfortably, so you get personal attention and can actually have conversations with other visitors and staff.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Distilling Without the Tourist Polish

This appeals most to people who appreciate the technical side of distilling and want to support a genuine local operation rather than just sample spirits. You’ll get educational value and personal interaction with the founders, but don’t expect a polished Kentucky bourbon trail experience—this is scrappier and more authentic. Spirit enthusiasts will appreciate tasting products you can’t find elsewhere, while casual visitors might find the selection smaller than expected. It’s better for intimate experiences than large groups, and the personal stories behind each bottle make it more interesting than generic tastings. If you’re exploring Michigan’s craft spirits scene, Iron Shoe represents the grassroots side of the movement.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before visiting, as hours can vary during production days or for special events. Parking is street parking in downtown Niles, which is usually easy to find but pay attention to any posted restrictions. Saturday afternoons tend to be busiest, so weekday visits offer more one-on-one time with staff. Ask about their current barrel-aging projects—Rob loves talking about the technical aspects and what they’re experimenting with next. Don’t expect a huge selection compared to larger distilleries, but do try their flagship bourbon and ask about any limited releases they might have available. The GPS address is accurate, and the building is easy to spot with Iron Shoe signage on North 3rd Street.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Iron Shoe Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation for tours and tastings?
Reservations aren’t required for regular tastings, but it’s smart to call ahead since hours can vary during production days. For groups larger than six people, definitely call first to make sure they can accommodate you properly.
Can I buy bottles of their spirits to take home?
Yes, they sell bottles on-site of whatever spirits are currently available. Selection depends on production cycles and what’s finished aging, so inventory varies throughout the year.
What makes their distilling process different from other craft distilleries?
Iron Shoe does true grain-to-glass production using locally-sourced Michigan grains and a custom-designed copper pot still. Rob Dickerson engineered modifications to their equipment for more precise temperature control, and they handle every step from fermentation through bottling on-site.
