ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Lakeside Distillery Where Former Viking Makes Spirits

Ida Graves Distillery sits on the shores of Lake Ida in Alexandria, Minnesota, founded by husband-and-wife team Chad and Jenni Greenway in 2016. Chad, a former NFL linebacker who played for the Minnesota Vikings, partnered with his wife to create what became Minnesota’s first farm distillery after retiring from professional football. The distillery operates out of a 6,000-square-foot facility that combines production space with a tasting room overlooking the lake, where they produce vodka, gin, bourbon, and seasonal spirits using locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible. The Greenways didn’t stumble into distilling by accident. Chad’s interest in spirits began during his playing days, but it was the couple’s desire to create something rooted in Minnesota agriculture that drove them to spend two years learning the craft before opening. They work with local farmers to source corn and other grains, and Jenni handles much of the business operations while Chad focuses on production and recipe development. The transition from NFL stadiums to copper stills wasn’t without challenges—navigating Minnesota’s complex liquor laws and building relationships with local suppliers took longer than expected, but their athletic discipline translated well to the precision required in distilling. Visitors get more than just tastings here—you’re experiencing a working farm distillery where the owners are usually on-site and happy to talk process. The tasting room features floor-to-ceiling windows facing Lake Ida, and during production days you can watch the distillation process through glass partitions. Chad’s NFL memorabilia is scattered throughout, but it doesn’t dominate the space. Instead, the focus stays on the spirits and the view. The atmosphere strikes a balance between professional operation and laid-back lake life, which makes sense given Alexandria’s reputation as a vacation destination.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

NFL Linebacker Turned Master Distiller

Having a former NFL linebacker as your master distiller isn’t something you see every day, but what really sets Ida Graves apart is their commitment to Minnesota agriculture and their location. They’re one of the few distilleries in the state that actively partners with local farmers for grain sourcing, creating a true farm-to-bottle operation. The lakeside location provides a unique setting for tastings—you’re literally sipping spirits while looking out over the water that inspired the distillery’s name. Their small scale allows for experimentation that larger operations can’t match, and Chad’s perfectionist approach, honed through years of professional athletics, shows in the consistency of their products.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Owners Pour Your Tastings While Stills Bubble

You’ll typically be greeted by either Chad or Jenni, or one of their knowledgeable staff who can walk you through their entire process from grain to glass. The tasting room feels more like a lakeside cabin than a sterile industrial space, with large windows showcasing Lake Ida and comfortable seating that encourages you to linger. Tastings are relaxed affairs where you can ask questions about everything from mash bills to Chad’s football career, and they’re genuinely happy to explain their processes. On production days, you can watch the stills in action and smell the fermentation happening just steps away from where you’re sitting.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Minnesota Farm-to-Bottle Done Right

If you’re interested in craft spirits and appreciate meeting the actual people behind the operation, Ida Graves delivers. The combination of quality products, beautiful location, and engaging owners makes it worth the trip to Alexandria. It’s particularly appealing if you enjoy supporting local agriculture and want to understand the farm-to-bottle process. However, if you’re looking for extensive tour facilities or a party atmosphere, this might not be your spot. The experience is more intimate and educational than flashy, which some visitors prefer but others might find too low-key.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before visiting, as hours can vary seasonally and they sometimes close for private events. The GPS coordinates work fine, but look for the building with lake views—parking is easy and free. Try their gin if you’re not typically a gin drinker, as they’ve won several awards for it. Ask about their barrel program if you’re interested in purchasing whole barrels. Weekends tend to be busier, especially during summer months when Alexandria sees heavy lake traffic, so weekdays offer a more relaxed experience. Don’t be shy about asking Chad about his Vikings days—he’s got great stories and doesn’t mind sharing them.

Do you need to know about football to enjoy visiting?
Not at all. While Chad’s NFL background is part of the story, the focus stays on the spirits and distillation process. Whether you’re a Vikings fan or have never watched football, you’ll find plenty to appreciate about their craft distilling approach.
What makes your spirits different from other Minnesota distilleries?
Their commitment to local grain sourcing and their lakeside location set them apart, along with Chad’s methodical approach to distillation that carries over from his athletic career. The smaller scale allows for more experimental batches and personal attention to each product.
