ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Hudson Valley Distillers sits on a working farm along Route 9 in Germantown, about 20 minutes south of Albany. Founded by Derek Grout in 2010, this farm distillery grows many of its own grains right on the property’s 115 acres. Grout, who comes from a farming background, wanted to create spirits that truly reflected the Hudson Valley’s agricultural heritage. The distillery operates out of converted farm buildings, maintaining that authentic rural atmosphere while producing vodka, gin, whiskey, and seasonal spirits. What started as a one-man operation has grown into a family business, with Grout’s wife and kids often helping with everything from bottling to greeting visitors. The whole setup feels more like visiting a working farm than a typical distillery—because that’s exactly what it is. You’re tasting spirits made from grains that were literally growing in the fields you drove past to get here. The production is small-scale by design, with Grout handling most of the distillation himself on copper pot stills. This isn’t about mass production or chasing trends—it’s about making honest spirits from ingredients they know intimately because they grew them.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Hudson Valley Distillers is one of the few true farm distilleries in New York, meaning they actually grow a significant portion of their grain on-site rather than just sourcing locally. Grout plants corn, wheat, and other grains specifically for distillation, controlling the entire process from seed to bottle. The distillery also operates seasonally, shutting down production during planting and harvest times when farm work takes priority. This agricultural calendar approach is pretty rare in the distilling world, where most operations run year-round. They’re also experimenting with heritage grain varieties that were common in the Hudson Valley centuries ago, trying to recreate flavors that disappeared when industrial agriculture took over.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll meet Derek or another family member who’ll walk you through the farm-to-bottle process, often starting outside to see the grain fields before heading into the production area. The tasting room is casual and unpretentious—think farmhouse kitchen more than sleek bar. Tours include seeing the mash tuns, fermentation tanks, and copper stills, with plenty of explanation about how different grains affect flavor. The tastings are generous and educational, with Grout happy to explain seasonal variations in his spirits based on weather conditions during growing seasons. You can often see bottling or other production work happening during your visit since everything operates on a small scale.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re interested in the agricultural side of spirits and want to see true farm-to-bottle production, this is a genuine experience you won’t find at most distilleries. It appeals to people who appreciate the farming aspect as much as the distilling craft. The spirits themselves are solid rather than spectacular, but the story behind them and the transparency of the process make up for any lack of complexity. Don’t expect a polished, high-end tasting room experience—this is rustic and real. It’s perfect for visitors who want to understand where their spirits actually come from and enjoy meeting the people who make them. Skip it if you’re looking for premium pours or Instagram-worthy spaces.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead since hours can vary based on farm work schedules, especially during planting and harvest seasons. The distillery is right on Route 9, but keep an eye out for the farm signs since it’s not as obviously marked as some commercial distilleries. Spring through fall are the best times to visit when you can see crops growing and understand the full farm operation. Ask about the heritage grains if you’re interested in agricultural history—Grout is passionate about reviving old varieties. Bring cash for bottle purchases since card processing can be spotty in the rural location. Don’t wear your nicest shoes since you might be walking through actual farm areas.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hudson Valley Distillers, LLC — Visitor FAQ

Do you really grow your own grains for distilling?
Yes, Hudson Valley Distillers grows corn, wheat, and other grains on their 115-acre farm specifically for spirit production. Derek Grout handles both the farming and distilling, which is why operations follow an agricultural calendar rather than typical distillery schedules.
Why do your hours vary so much?
Since this is a working farm first and distillery second, tours and tastings get scheduled around farming activities like planting and harvesting. During busy farm seasons, distillery operations may be limited while the family focuses on agricultural work.
What makes your spirits different from other craft distilleries?
The biggest difference is complete control over ingredients from seed to bottle. Most distilleries buy their grains from suppliers, but here you can literally see where your spirits started growing. The flavors also vary seasonally based on weather conditions during the growing season, which you won’t find with purchased grains.
