Gutter Bound Distillery sits on a sprawling property along Highway 13 in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, the same small town that Loretta Lynn called home for decades. Founded by husband-and-wife team Jason and Amanda Caruthers in 2018, this craft distillery emerged from Jason’s background in construction and Amanda’s hospitality experience, plus a shared love of Tennessee whiskey traditions. The operation runs out of a custom-built facility that Jason largely constructed himself, housing copper pot stills and barrel storage in a no-nonsense industrial space that prioritizes function over flash.
The Caruthers started Gutter Bound after years of home distilling and studying traditional Tennessee methods, particularly the Lincoln County Process that defines Tennessee whiskey. Jason handles production while Amanda manages the tasting room and visitor experience, creating a genuinely family-run operation where you’re likely to meet the actual owners during your visit. They focus on small-batch bourbon and Tennessee whiskey, with plans to expand into rye as their operation matures.
Visitors get an authentic look at craft distilling without the corporate polish of larger operations. The tasting room doubles as a retail space where you can sample their current releases while Jason or Amanda explains their process and philosophy. It’s the kind of place where conversations flow as freely as the samples, and you’ll leave understanding both the technical aspects of distilling and the personal journey that brought this couple to Hurricane Mills.
