ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Charlotte's First Since Prohibition Making History Again

Great Wagon Road Distilling Company sits in Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood at 610 Anderson Street, occupying a converted warehouse space that fits right into this artsy district known for its galleries and craft breweries. Founded in 2013 by Olde Mecklenburg Brewery veterans John Marrino and Brewmaster Chip Morrison, along with distilling consultant Rob Cassell, the operation represents Charlotte’s entry into the craft spirits movement. They opened their doors in 2016 after navigating the complex process of bringing distilling back to Charlotte for the first time since Prohibition. Marrino and Morrison brought their beer-making expertise to spirits, but had to learn distilling from scratch. They brought in Cassell, who had consulting experience with other craft distilleries, to help design their production setup and develop recipes. The team focused on creating a neighborhood gathering spot that would complement NoDa’s existing craft beverage scene. Their 1,500-square-foot facility houses a custom 500-gallon copper pot still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works, the same Kentucky company that builds stills for many major bourbon distilleries. You’ll find them producing bourbon, rye whiskey, and seasonal spirits in small batches, with most of their whiskey aging in 15-gallon barrels to speed up the maturation process. The tasting room has a relaxed, industrial feel with exposed brick walls and local artwork, designed to feel more like a neighborhood bar than a formal distillery tour destination. They’ve built a solid local following by focusing on approachable spirits and creating a space where people want to hang out rather than just sample and leave.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Fifteen Gallon Barrels Age Bourbon Faster

Great Wagon Road stands out as Charlotte’s first legal distillery since Prohibition, making them genuine pioneers in bringing spirits production back to the Queen City. Their use of 15-gallon barrels instead of the standard 53-gallon barrels is a deliberate choice that accelerates aging and creates different flavor profiles than traditional bourbon. The name itself tells a story – the Great Wagon Road was the historic migration route that brought settlers through Charlotte in the 1700s, connecting their spirits to the area’s colonial history. Their location in NoDa puts them at the heart of Charlotte’s most creative neighborhood, surrounded by art galleries and breweries rather than in an industrial park.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Neighborhood Bar Vibes Real Craft Spirit

You’re walking into what feels more like a neighborhood bar than a formal distillery experience. The tasting room showcases their copper still through large windows, so you can see the production equipment while sipping their spirits. Tastings happen at a casual bar setup where you’ll try their current whiskey releases and seasonal spirits, with staff explaining how their smaller barrel aging affects the flavor. The atmosphere is relaxed and conversational – you’re not getting a scripted tour, but rather hanging out with people who are passionate about what they’re making and happy to share the story.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Perfect NoDa Stop For Whiskey Curious

If you’re exploring Charlotte’s craft beverage scene or you’re curious about how small-batch distilling works, this is a solid stop. Whiskey enthusiasts will find the barrel aging experiments interesting, and the location makes it easy to combine with other NoDa attractions. Don’t expect a Kentucky-style bourbon tourism experience – this is smaller scale and more intimate. It’s perfect for people who want to support local craft spirits and prefer conversation over formal presentations. The spirits are still young since they only started distilling in 2016, so set expectations accordingly.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Check their social media before visiting since hours can be limited and they sometimes close for private events. Parking in NoDa can be tricky, especially on weekends when the neighborhood gets busy – look for street parking on side streets off North Davidson. Try their bourbon to taste how the smaller barrel aging affects the flavor profile compared to traditional bourbon. Ask about their seasonal releases since they experiment with different grains and aging techniques. The staff genuinely enjoys talking about their process, so don’t hesitate to ask questions about their equipment or aging experiments.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Great Wagon Road Distilling Company — Visitor FAQ

What makes Great Wagon Road different from other distilleries?
They’re Charlotte’s first distillery since Prohibition and use 15-gallon barrels instead of standard 53-gallon barrels. This smaller barrel aging speeds up maturation and creates different flavor profiles than traditional bourbon aging.
Do I need to book ahead for tastings?
No reservations needed for regular tastings, but check their social media for current hours since they sometimes close for private events. Weekend visits are more reliable for finding them open.
How old are their whiskeys?
Since they started distilling in 2016, their whiskeys are relatively young. However, their 15-gallon barrel aging process accelerates maturation compared to traditional 53-gallon barrels, so the spirits develop complexity faster than typical aging timelines.
