ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Garage Dream That Made It Real

Good Spirits Distilling sits in a modest industrial space in Olathe, Kansas, where founders Mike and Jenny Patterson have been quietly crafting small-batch spirits since 2018. The husband-and-wife team left corporate careers in finance and marketing to chase their dream of making authentic American whiskey in the heart of Kansas. Their 3,000-square-foot facility houses a 250-gallon copper still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works, along with a small tasting room that feels more like visiting friends than a commercial operation. Mike spent years perfecting recipes in his garage before they took the leap, while Jenny handles the business side and developed their signature cocktail program. They focus on bourbon and rye whiskey, using Kansas-grown corn and wheat when possible, though they’re honest about the challenges of sourcing everything locally. The operation remains intentionally small—they produce about 200 barrels per year, allowing them to oversee every step personally. Visitors get an intimate look at craft distilling without the bells and whistles of larger operations. You’re likely to meet Mike or Jenny during your visit, and they’re genuinely passionate about explaining their process. The tasting room doubles as their retail space, and weekend visits often feature live acoustic music. It’s not fancy, but there’s something refreshing about a distillery that’s more focused on the liquid than the experience.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Husband and Wife Still Do Everything

Good Spirits stands out for being unapologetically small and authentic in an industry increasingly focused on expansion and marketing. Mike and Jenny still personally oversee every batch, from mashing to bottling, and they’re not trying to be the next big thing. Their bourbon uses a wheated mash bill that’s softer and more approachable than high-rye recipes, and they age everything in 15-gallon barrels for faster maturation—a technique that produces good whiskey in Kansas’s variable climate. They’re also one of the few distilleries in the Kansas City metro area focusing exclusively on American whiskey rather than diversifying into vodka and gin.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Polish Required Just Good Whiskey

Tours happen on weekends and feel like visiting a working distillery, not a polished tourist attraction. Mike or Jenny personally walk you through their small operation, explaining their mash bill choices and showing off their copper still setup. The tasting room is cozy with a few high-top tables and bar seating for maybe 20 people. You’ll sample their current offerings, which typically include their flagship bourbon and seasonal rye releases. The whole experience takes about 45 minutes and feels conversational rather than scripted.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Kansas City's Hidden Gem

If you’re looking for an authentic, low-key distillery experience, Good Spirits delivers exactly that. It’s perfect for whiskey enthusiasts who want to understand small-batch production without crowds or corporate polish. Don’t expect elaborate facilities or extensive food options—this is about meeting passionate distillers and tasting honest whiskey. It’s also a good choice if you’re exploring the Kansas City area and want something off the beaten path. Just manage expectations about the scale.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page before visiting, as hours can vary based on production schedules and the fact that it’s owner-operated. Weekend afternoons are your best bet for catching Mike or Jenny personally. The location is in an industrial area, so GPS is essential—look for the small sign on the building. Parking is easy with a small lot out front. Ask about their aging process in smaller barrels if you’re curious about craft distilling techniques. They’re happy to talk shop if you show genuine interest.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Good Spirits Distilling — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation for tastings?
Reservations aren’t required, but it’s smart to call ahead since Mike and Jenny personally handle tours and tastings. Weekend afternoons are typically your best bet for availability.
What’s the difference between their bourbon and rye?
Their bourbon uses a wheated mash bill that’s softer and more approachable than high-rye recipes. The rye whiskey features higher rye content for more spice and complexity. Both are aged in smaller 15-gallon barrels.
Can I buy bottles to take home?
Yes, they sell bottles on-site when available. Since production is limited to about 200 barrels per year, selection depends on what they currently have ready for release.
