ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Capital City Bourbon Back in Business

Glenns Creek Distilling sits along the historic McCracken Pike in Frankfort, Kentucky’s capital city, where bourbon has been flowing since the 1800s. Founded by Mike Blandford and his team, this craft distillery opened in 2018 with a mission to bring small-batch bourbon production back to Franklin County’s whiskey heritage. The operation runs out of a renovated industrial building that houses their custom copper still and barrel aging program. They focus on bourbon, rye whiskey, and moonshine, keeping production deliberately small to maintain hands-on quality control. What started as Blandford’s passion project after years in business has grown into a legitimate distillery that’s earning respect from Kentucky bourbon circles. The facility combines modern distilling equipment with traditional Kentucky methods, creating spirits that reflect both innovation and regional tradition. You’ll find a tasting room where visitors can sample their growing lineup of aged spirits while learning about the distillation process from people who actually make the whiskey.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Small Batches in Bourbon's Birthplace

Being located in Kentucky’s capital city gives Glenns Creek a unique position in bourbon country – they’re close enough to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to draw serious whiskey tourists, but far enough from the major distilleries to offer a more intimate experience. Their small-batch approach means they can experiment with different mash bills and aging techniques without the pressure of massive production quotas. The distillery also benefits from Franklin County’s limestone-filtered water, the same geological advantage that made this area famous for bourbon production in the first place.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Corporate Tour Just Real Whiskey

The tasting room has that comfortable, unpretentious vibe you want from a craft distillery – exposed brick, bourbon barrel furniture, and the sweet smell of mash and aging spirits in the air. Tours take you through their production facility where you can see the copper still in action and learn about their fermentation and distillation process. The staff knows their products well and can walk you through the differences between their bourbon and rye expressions. Tastings let you sample their current lineup while getting the story behind each spirit’s development.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Find Them Before Everyone Else Does

If you’re touring bourbon country and want to experience a smaller operation that’s still building its reputation, Glenns Creek offers something different from the mega-distilleries. You won’t get the polished tour experience of Buffalo Trace or the historic gravitas of Woodford Reserve, but you will get to interact directly with the people making the whiskey and taste spirits that aren’t available everywhere. It’s perfect for bourbon enthusiasts who enjoy discovering newer distilleries before they become household names. Casual visitors will appreciate the relaxed atmosphere and educational approach without feeling overwhelmed.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before visiting since hours can vary and they sometimes close for private events. The distillery is located on McCracken Pike, which is easy to find but make sure your GPS has the correct address since there are several industrial buildings in the area. Ask about their barrel program if you’re interested in purchasing your own barrel for aging. Try their rye whiskey if it’s available – smaller distilleries often do interesting things with rye that you won’t find from larger producers.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Glenns Creek Distilling — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make reservations for tours and tastings?
Reservations aren’t required but are recommended, especially on weekends or if you’re coming with a larger group. Call ahead to make sure they’re open since hours can sometimes change for private events or production needs.
What spirits can I buy at the distillery?
You can purchase bottles of their bourbon, rye whiskey, and moonshine directly from the tasting room. Availability depends on current production and aging schedules since they’re a smaller operation.
How does Glenns Creek compare to other bourbon distilleries in the area?
Glenns Creek offers a more intimate experience than the larger bourbon trail distilleries. You’ll get to interact directly with the production team and learn about craft distilling methods, though the facility is smaller and less polished than major tourist destinations like Buffalo Trace.
