Front Porch Distillery sits on Highway 59 just outside Nacogdoches, Texas, in what feels like genuine East Texas countryside. Founded by husband-and-wife team David and Tina Doherty in 2017, the operation grew from David’s passion for craft distilling that started as a home hobby. David, who previously worked in the oil and gas industry, decided to turn his weekend experiments into a full-scale business after friends kept asking where they could buy his spirits. The distillery opened its doors in 2019 in a purpose-built facility that captures the laid-back, front-porch vibe they wanted to create.
The Dohertys designed their operation around small-batch production, focusing on bourbon, vodka, and moonshine that reflects East Texas character. David handles the distilling while Tina manages the business side and visitor experience. They use a combination of traditional methods and modern equipment, with a 500-gallon copper pot still as the centerpiece of their operation. The philosophy here is straightforward: make spirits they’d want to drink themselves, using quality ingredients and taking the time to do things right.
Visitors find a relaxed atmosphere that lives up to the front porch name. The tasting room feels like you’re visiting friends rather than touring a corporate facility, with comfortable seating and windows overlooking the production area. You can watch the distilling process during tours, taste their spirits, and often chat directly with David about his methods. The scale is small enough that you get personal attention, but professional enough that the spirits are genuinely well-crafted.
