ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Nevada Ranch That Happens to Distill Whiskey

Frey Ranch Distillery sits on 1,500 acres of ranch land in Fallon, Nevada, about an hour east of Reno in the high desert of the Lahontan Valley. Colby and Ashley Frey founded this grain-to-glass operation in 2006, transforming their fourth-generation family farm into Nevada’s first distillery since Prohibition. Colby, who studied at UC Davis and holds degrees in both plant science and brewing, grows all the grain right on the property—corn, wheat, rye, and barley—making them one of the few truly estate distilleries in America. The 8,000-square-foot distillery opened its doors to visitors in 2013, housed in a modern agricultural building that fits right into the working ranch landscape. They produce bourbon, rye whiskey, and vodka, all from grains that never travel more than a few hundred yards from field to fermentation tank. The Freys didn’t just stumble into distilling—Colby spent years perfecting his recipes and studying fermentation science before committing to the transition from cattle ranching to whiskey making. Ashley handles much of the business side while Colby focuses on production, and together they’ve built something genuinely different in the spirits world. You’re not just visiting a distillery here; you’re stepping onto an active farm where the entire whiskey-making process happens in one place.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Grain to Glass From the Same Fields

Frey Ranch is one of only a handful of true estate distilleries in the United States, meaning they control every step from seed to bottle. Colby grows winter wheat, corn, rye, and barley on the ranch using sustainable farming practices, rotating crops to maintain soil health. The high desert climate of Nevada—with its hot days, cool nights, and low humidity—creates unique aging conditions that you won’t find in Kentucky or Tennessee. They use their own well water drawn from an underground aquifer, and the grain bill changes slightly year to year based on what the land produces best. The bourbon ages in a climate-controlled warehouse where the extreme temperature swings of the Nevada desert are moderated but still influence the whiskey’s development. What really sets them apart is Colby’s background in plant science and brewing—he’s not just a farmer who decided to distill, he’s a scientist who understands fermentation at a molecular level.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Science Meets Agriculture In the High Desert

You’ll start in the tasting room, which feels more like a ranch house living room than a slick distillery showroom, with reclaimed wood and agricultural touches throughout. Tours take you out to see the grain fields (depending on season), then into the production facility where you can see their custom-built German copper still and fermentation tanks. Colby or one of his team walks you through the entire process, from the specific varieties of grain they grow to how Nevada’s climate affects aging. The tasting happens back in the main building, where you’ll try their bourbon, rye, and vodka while looking out over the fields where the grain actually grew. It’s intimate—tours are kept small, and you’ll likely get to ask detailed questions about everything from soil composition to barrel char levels. The whole experience takes about 90 minutes and feels more like visiting friends who happen to make exceptional whiskey than a commercial distillery tour.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Drive From Reno

If you’re interested in the agricultural side of whiskey making or want to understand what ‘grain to glass’ actually means, this is essential. Bourbon enthusiasts will appreciate the chance to taste whiskey that’s genuinely different from anything coming out of Kentucky, with flavor profiles shaped by Nevada’s unique climate and Colby’s scientific approach to fermentation. The drive from Reno isn’t nothing—it’s about an hour through fairly desolate country—but that isolation is part of what makes the experience special. You won’t find crowds here, and you won’t get a rushed, scripted tour. This isn’t the place to go if you want a party atmosphere or elaborate cocktail program. It’s for people who want to understand how whiskey actually gets made and taste something genuinely distinctive. The bourbon has won several national awards, so you’re not just getting novelty—you’re getting quality that happens to come from an unexpected place.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule your tour—they don’t do walk-ins, and weekend slots fill up especially during harvest season in fall. The ranch can be tricky to find, so pay attention to their website directions rather than just following GPS. Bring a jacket even in summer—the high desert gets cold when the sun goes down. If you’re coming from Reno, consider making a day of it and exploring historic Virginia City on the way back. Ask Colby about the specific grain varieties he’s growing when you visit—he’s genuinely passionate about the agricultural science and will talk your ear off if you’re interested. The best time to visit is during harvest season in late summer and early fall when you can see the grain coming in and understand the connection between farm and bottle. Don’t expect to buy bottles of their aged whiskey on every visit—small batch means small batch, and they often sell out of specific expressions.
