ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Fox Trail Distillery sits on South Bellview Road in Rogers, Arkansas, occupying a converted warehouse that’s been transformed into Northwest Arkansas’s first legal distillery since Prohibition. Founded by Jess Rude in 2014, this operation started as a dream born from his fascination with the science and craft of distillation. Rude, who previously worked in manufacturing, spent years researching distillation techniques and studying under established distillers before launching Fox Trail. The distillery produces vodka, gin, whiskey, and seasonal spirits using a custom-built copper still system. The journey to opening wasn’t simple. Rude had to navigate Arkansas’s complex distilling laws and work with local officials to establish the legal framework for craft distilling in Rogers. He partnered with local farmers to source corn and other grains, building relationships that would become central to Fox Trail’s identity as an Arkansas-rooted operation. The 5,000-square-foot facility houses everything from grain storage to bottling, with Rude overseeing production while his wife Amy manages the tasting room operations. What started as a one-man operation has grown into a legitimate production facility that’s helped establish Northwest Arkansas as a craft spirits destination. The distillery focuses on small-batch production, with Rude personally involved in every aspect from mashing to bottling. Visitors can see the entire process during tours, from the grain bins to the fermentation tanks to the copper pot still that’s become the heart of the operation.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Fox Trail holds the distinction of being the first legal distillery to operate in Northwest Arkansas since Prohibition ended, making it a genuine pioneer in the region’s craft spirits revival. What sets them apart is their commitment to using Arkansas-grown corn and working directly with local farmers to source ingredients. Jess Rude built much of the operation himself, from custom fermentation tanks to the grain handling systems, creating a truly hands-on approach that’s rare in modern distilling. The facility operates more like a working laboratory than a polished tourist destination, giving visitors an authentic look at craft distillation without the corporate polish found at larger operations.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll walk into a working warehouse where the smell of fermenting grain and copper stills hits you immediately. Jess or Amy typically leads tours personally, explaining each step of their process while you move between the mash tuns, fermentation tanks, and the gleaming copper still. The tasting room feels more like a friend’s garage bar than a fancy cocktail lounge, with concrete floors and industrial lighting, but that’s exactly the authentic vibe they’re going for. You can taste their current lineup while watching the actual production happening just feet away, and Jess is usually happy to dive deep into the technical aspects if you’re genuinely interested in the distilling process.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re looking for Instagram-perfect tasting rooms and polished presentations, this might not be your spot. But if you want to see actual craft distilling in action and learn from someone who built their operation from scratch, Fox Trail delivers something most distilleries can’t. It’s perfect for spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the technical side of distillation, or anyone curious about Arkansas’s growing craft spirits scene. You’ll leave knowing more about how whiskey actually gets made than you will at most tour-heavy operations. Just don’t expect fancy amenities or elaborate cocktail programs.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before showing up, as tours depend on production schedules and whether Jess is available to guide them personally. The distillery isn’t always obvious from the road, so look for the small sign on the warehouse building. Weekends are typically better for visits, but production happens during weekdays if you want to see the stills actually running. Ask about their aging process and the challenges of distilling in Arkansas’s climate – Jess has strong opinions about how the humidity affects their whiskey development. Don’t come expecting a polished retail experience, but do come ready to learn about the real nuts and bolts of craft distilling.
