ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Urban Distilling in Downtown DC

Founding Spirits sits right in the heart of downtown DC at 600 Massachusetts Avenue, occupying a sleek space that feels more urban cocktail destination than traditional distillery. Founded in 2016 by husband-and-wife team Nick and Caroline Farina, this operation emerged from their shared passion for craft spirits and Nick’s background in hospitality. The 3,000-square-foot facility houses both production and a polished tasting room where DC professionals and tourists alike come to sample house-made vodka, gin, and whiskey. Nick brings restaurant industry experience to the venture, having worked in hospitality before diving into distilling, while Caroline handles much of the business operations. They started small with a 300-gallon copper still from Louisville, focusing initially on vodka and gin before expanding into whiskey production. The couple saw an opportunity to bring craft distilling to DC’s growing food and drink scene, setting up shop in a neighborhood that’s become a hub for local businesses. The experience here leans more toward craft cocktails than traditional distillery tours. You’re not walking through massive rickhouses or watching grain being milled – this is urban distilling at its core. The tasting room dominates the space, with the production equipment visible but compact. It’s designed for people who want to taste quality spirits in a refined setting rather than get their boots dirty learning about mash bills and fermentation.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Bartenders Who Learned to Distill

Founding Spirits operates as one of the few craft distilleries actually within DC proper, making it a genuine local option in a city where most spirits are produced elsewhere. Their approach focuses heavily on the cocktail experience rather than traditional distillery tourism – they’re distillers who think like bartenders. The urban setting means everything is compact and efficient, with production happening on a smaller scale that lets them experiment with different botanicals and aging techniques. They’ve positioned themselves as part of DC’s broader craft beverage scene, connecting with local restaurants and bars in ways that more remote distilleries can’t match.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Craft Cocktails Made Right Behind the Bar

You’ll spend most of your time in their polished tasting room rather than touring production facilities. The staff behind the bar are knowledgeable about their spirits and can walk you through tastings that highlight how their vodka, gin, and whiskey work in cocktails versus neat pours. The space feels more like an upscale neighborhood bar than a rustic distillery, with exposed brick and modern fixtures creating an urban vibe. You can watch some of the production process through windows, but the real focus is on sampling their spirits in well-crafted cocktails that show off the distiller’s intention.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Perfect for Downtown Adventures

This works best for people who want to support local DC spirits without driving out to rural Virginia or Maryland. If you’re expecting traditional distillery charm with copper pot stills dominating the space and detailed production tours, you might be disappointed. But if you appreciate craft cocktails made with house spirits and want to understand how urban distilling works, it’s a solid stop. The location makes it easy to combine with other downtown activities, and the cocktail program is genuinely good. Just know you’re getting more of a craft cocktail bar experience that happens to make its own spirits.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Check their website or call ahead since hours can vary and they sometimes close for private events. The space isn’t huge, so if you’re coming with a group larger than four, definitely give them a heads up. Parking downtown can be tricky – there are meters on Massachusetts Avenue but consider Metro or rideshare if you’re planning to sample cocktails. Ask specifically about their gin if you’re into botanicals – that’s where they seem to put a lot of creative energy. The whiskey is still young since they’ve only been distilling since 2016, so manage expectations accordingly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Founding Spirits — Visitor FAQ

Is this more of a distillery tour or a cocktail bar experience?
It’s definitely more cocktail bar than traditional distillery tour. You can see some production equipment, but the focus is on tasting their spirits in well-made cocktails rather than learning about the distilling process in detail.
How old is their whiskey?
Since they started distilling in 2016, their whiskey is still relatively young – most releases are under five years old. They’re building up aged inventory over time, so expect younger expressions for now.
Can I just buy bottles without doing a tasting?
Yes, they sell bottles of their vodka, gin, and available whiskey releases on-site. You don’t need to do a tasting to purchase bottles, though the staff can certainly help you understand what you’re buying.
