Foggy Mountain Spirits Co. sits on Thumb Lake Road in Boyne Falls, Michigan, a small Northern Michigan town that’s better known for skiing than spirits. Founded by Dan and Christine Stamper in 2019, this craft distillery emerged from Dan’s background in commercial construction and Christine’s passion for hospitality. The couple converted a 3,000-square-foot building into their production facility and tasting room, installing custom copper stills and creating a warm, rustic space that feels more like a friend’s cabin than a corporate operation.
The Stampers didn’t stumble into distilling by accident. Dan had been home-distilling for years as a hobby, perfecting recipes and techniques while running his construction business. When Michigan’s craft distilling laws became more favorable, they saw an opportunity to turn passion into profession. They focus primarily on whiskey and bourbon, using locally sourced grains when possible and aging their spirits in charred oak barrels. The operation is genuinely small-batch, with Dan handling most of the production himself while Christine manages the front of house and special events.
Visitors get an intimate look at craft distilling in action. You’re not walking through a massive industrial facility here—you can actually see the entire operation from the tasting room, watch Dan work the stills, and smell the mash cooking. The space has that authentic Northern Michigan vibe with exposed beams and local artwork, and the Stampers or their small team are usually around to chat about the process. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying longer than planned, learning about grain bills and barrel aging while sipping spirits that taste like someone actually cared about making them.
