ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Flying Leap Vineyards & Distillery sits on 40 acres of high desert grassland at 4,500 feet elevation in Elgin, Arizona, about an hour southeast of Tucson. Founded by Paul and Kief Manning in 2001, this family operation started as a vineyard but expanded into distilling in 2011 when they installed a German copper still. The property includes both the working vineyard and distillery in a rustic tasting room that captures the wide-open feel of southern Arizona’s wine country. You’ll find brandies made from their own grapes alongside traditional spirits in a setting that feels more like visiting friends than a formal distillery tour. The Mannings built this place from scratch on raw land, planting vines and constructing buildings while learning the craft of both winemaking and distilling. Paul handles much of the production side while Kief manages the business operations, and their hands-on approach shows in every aspect of the operation. The elevation and climate create unique aging conditions you won’t find in most distilleries, with dramatic temperature swings between desert days and cool nights.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

The high desert location at 4,500 feet creates aging conditions that are rare in the distilling world – extreme temperature fluctuations between hot days and cool nights accelerate the interaction between spirits and oak. They’re one of the few distilleries that also grows their own grapes for brandy production, giving them complete control from vine to bottle. The German copper still they imported allows for precise control over distillation, and their small scale means every batch gets personal attention. The Manning family literally built this operation from empty land, which gives the whole place an authentic pioneer feel that matches the Arizona frontier setting.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll taste in a casual room with windows overlooking the vineyard and the Mustang Mountains beyond. The atmosphere is relaxed and conversational – the Mannings or their staff will walk you through their spirits while explaining how the desert climate affects aging. The tasting includes both their brandies made from estate grapes and traditional spirits, with stories about the challenges of distilling in Arizona’s extreme climate. The space feels lived-in rather than polished, with the working distillery visible nearby and the scent of fermenting grapes or spirits depending on the season.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

This appeals most to visitors who enjoy off-the-beaten-path experiences and want to see how altitude and climate create unique spirits. It’s perfect if you’re already exploring Arizona’s wine country and want something different from the typical vineyard experience. Don’t expect a polished operation or extensive cocktail program – this is about tasting distinctive spirits in a beautiful setting while learning from people who built something from nothing. Wine enthusiasts will appreciate the crossover into distilling, and anyone interested in how geography affects aging will find the elevation and climate story fascinating.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm they’re open since this is a small family operation that can have irregular hours. The drive from Tucson takes about an hour on winding roads, so plan accordingly and use GPS carefully since rural addresses can be tricky. Spring and fall offer the best weather for enjoying the outdoor areas, while summer visits should be planned for earlier in the day. Ask about their brandy production process if you visit during grape harvest season in late summer. Bring cash for purchases since rural operations sometimes have limited payment options.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Flying Leap Vineyards & Distillery (Winery Estate – Elgin, AZ) — Visitor FAQ

How does the high desert elevation affect your spirits?
At 4,500 feet with extreme temperature swings between day and night, our spirits age faster and develop different characteristics than they would at lower elevations. The dramatic temperature changes force more interaction between the liquid and oak.
Do you make brandy from your own grapes?
Yes, we grow grapes on our 40-acre vineyard specifically for brandy production. This gives us complete control over the process from vine to bottle and creates a unique connection between our location and our spirits.
Should I call before visiting?
Definitely call ahead since we’re a small family operation. Our hours can vary seasonally and we want to make sure someone’s available to give you the full experience when you make the drive out to Elgin.
