ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Engineering Precision Meets Small-Town Craft

English Prairie Distilling Co. sits on North Wisconsin Avenue in Muscoda, a small Wisconsin River town where founders Tim and Jacque Weymouth turned their dream of craft distilling into reality in 2018. Tim, a former mechanical engineer, and Jacque, who brought business acumen to the operation, spent years researching and planning before opening their doors in a converted building that houses both their production facility and tasting room. They focus on small-batch spirits made with locally sourced ingredients when possible, producing vodka, gin, and whiskey that reflect their commitment to quality over quantity. The husband-and-wife team handles most operations themselves, from mashing and distilling to bottling and serving customers in their intimate tasting space. What started as a retirement project has become a labor of love that’s brought craft spirits to southwestern Wisconsin, where they’re among the few distilleries serving the region. The operation runs on a custom copper still system that allows them to control every aspect of production, and they’ve built relationships with local farmers and suppliers to source grains and botanicals. Their approach emphasizes traditional distilling methods combined with modern quality control, and they’ve slowly built a following among locals and visitors exploring Wisconsin’s growing craft spirits scene.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Wisconsin River Valley Grain to Glass

English Prairie distinguishes itself through its genuinely local approach and intimate scale in a region where craft distilleries are still relatively rare. Tim’s engineering background shows in their precise, methodical approach to distillation, and they’ve invested in quality equipment that allows for careful control of cuts and consistency. The distillery sources ingredients locally when possible and has developed relationships with Wisconsin farmers, connecting their spirits to the agricultural landscape around them. Their location in Muscoda puts them off the beaten path of typical distillery tourism, which means visitors get an authentic, unhurried experience rather than a polished commercial tour.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers In Their Workshop

Visiting English Prairie feels like stepping into someone’s passion project rather than a corporate operation. The tasting room occupies the same space as the production facility, so you can see the copper still and fermentation tanks while you sample spirits. Tim or Jacque typically handle tastings personally, walking visitors through their production process and the stories behind each spirit. The atmosphere is relaxed and conversational, with the owners genuinely interested in sharing their craft and getting feedback from visitors. You’ll taste their vodka, gin, and any available whiskey while learning about their distilling philosophy and local ingredient sourcing.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Off the Beaten Path Worth the Journey

This is perfect for people who appreciate authentic, small-scale craft distilling and want to meet the actual makers behind the spirits. If you’re exploring Wisconsin’s craft beverage scene or looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience, English Prairie delivers genuine hospitality and quality spirits without pretense. It’s not for visitors seeking elaborate facilities or extensive food pairings, but it’s ideal for spirits enthusiasts who value craftsmanship and personal connection. The intimate setting means you’ll have time for real conversation about distilling techniques and local ingredients, something impossible at larger operations.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before visiting, as hours can vary and they sometimes close for production or personal commitments. The distillery is easy to find on Wisconsin Avenue, with parking available on-site. Come prepared with questions about their process or local sourcing if you’re interested in the technical side of distilling. Their whiskey availability depends on aging timelines, so ask about what’s currently available when you visit. Weekend visits often provide the best chance to meet both owners, and they’re always happy to share stories about starting the distillery.
