Dusty Road Distillery sits on 396 Davis School Road in Carter, Montana, a small agricultural community about 45 minutes from Billings. Founded by husband-and-wife team Josh and Sarah Mitchell in 2019, this family operation transforms locally-sourced grains into small-batch bourbon, rye, and vodka in a converted barn that once stored wheat from surrounding farms. Josh brings mechanical engineering expertise from his previous career in oil and gas, while Sarah handles the business side after years in hospitality management. They started this venture after falling in love with craft distilling during a Kentucky bourbon trail trip, deciding Montana’s clean water and abundant grain made perfect sense for their own operation. The couple produces everything on a 500-gallon copper still they named ‘Big Sky,’ processing about 1,000 bottles per month while maintaining day jobs. Their facility includes the production area, a small tasting room decorated with vintage farming equipment, and a retail space where you can buy bottles directly from the source. The Mitchells focus on bourbon and rye whiskeys that showcase Montana grain character, plus a clean vodka that’s become popular with locals who appreciate its smoothness.
