ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Deerhammer Distillery sits right on Main Street in Buena Vista, Colorado, occupying a restored 1880s building that once housed the town’s general store. Founders Lenny Eckstein and Amy Eckstein opened the doors in 2010, making it one of Colorado’s early craft distilleries. Lenny’s background in brewing and Amy’s business acumen drove them to transform the historic brick building into a working distillery and tasting room that produces whiskey, vodka, and gin. The Ecksteins didn’t just jump into distilling on a whim. Lenny spent years perfecting recipes and techniques before they committed to the business, working with a custom-built 250-gallon copper still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works. They focus on using Colorado-grown grains when possible and Rocky Mountain water, with production staying intentionally small to maintain quality control. The operation runs lean with Lenny handling distillation duties while Amy manages the business side and tasting room operations. Walking into Deerhammer feels like stepping into someone’s well-appointed living room rather than a typical distillery. The original brick walls and wood floors create warmth, while the copper still dominates one corner of the main room. You can watch production happen during your visit, smell the mash cooking, and taste spirits that were made just feet away. It’s the kind of place where you end up chatting with Lenny about grain bills or hearing stories about the building’s history from locals who remember when it was still the general store.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Deerhammer’s location puts it at 7,954 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest-altitude distilleries in the country. That elevation affects everything from fermentation to aging, with lower air pressure and dry mountain air creating unique conditions for spirit development. The building itself tells Colorado’s story, with original 1880s brick walls and floors that have watched Buena Vista evolve from mining town to outdoor recreation hub. Lenny’s approach to whiskey-making breaks from traditional bourbon rules, creating American single malts and rye whiskeys that reflect Colorado’s high-desert terroir rather than copying Kentucky or Tennessee styles.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll taste spirits while standing just feet from where they’re made, with the copper still and fermentation tanks visible from the bar area. Lenny or Amy often run tastings themselves, explaining their grain sourcing decisions and how altitude affects flavor development. The space feels intimate and conversational rather than formal, with exposed brick walls and mountain light streaming through tall windows. During production days, you can watch mash being stirred or hear the still running, giving you a real sense of the craft happening in real-time.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you appreciate small-batch spirits and want to understand how Colorado’s environment affects distilling, Deerhammer delivers an authentic experience. The setting on Main Street makes it easy to combine with other Buena Vista activities, and the Ecksteins’ hands-on approach means you’re learning from the actual distillers. Don’t expect a slick corporate tour experience, though. This is a working distillery first, tasting room second. The spirits reflect Colorado character more than traditional whiskey profiles, so bourbon purists might find the flavor profiles unexpected.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page before visiting, as hours can vary with production schedules and seasonal closures. Parking on Main Street is free but can fill up during summer weekends when outdoor enthusiasts flood Buena Vista. Ask Lenny about their grain sourcing if he’s running your tasting – he’s passionate about Colorado agriculture and can tell you exactly which farms their grains come from. Try their rye whiskey if available, as it showcases their high-altitude aging effects better than their other spirits. Winter visits offer a more intimate experience with locals rather than tourists.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Deerhammer Distillery & Tasting Room — Visitor FAQ

How does the high altitude affect your spirits?
At nearly 8,000 feet, the lower air pressure and dry climate change how fermentation works and spirits age. The alcohol evaporates faster during aging, concentrating flavors differently than at sea level. You’ll taste the difference in our whiskeys compared to spirits made in traditional regions.
Do you use Colorado ingredients?
We source Colorado-grown grains when possible and always use Rocky Mountain water. Lenny works directly with local farmers and can tell you exactly which farms our grains come from during tastings.
Can I see production during my visit?
The distillery operates in the same space as the tasting room, so you’ll see our equipment and often smell production happening. On distilling days, you might watch mash being prepared or hear the still running during your tasting.
