ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

River History Meets Tennessee Whiskey

Dam Whiskey Corp sits in Guild, Tennessee, a small community along the Tennessee River where the old Hales Bar Dam once stood. Founded by Tommy Couch and his partners, this operation launched in 2020 with the ambitious goal of creating premium Tennessee whiskey in a location steeped in river history. The distillery operates out of a 6,000 square foot facility on Hales Bar Road, where they’ve installed custom copper stills and are methodically building their whiskey program from grain to glass. Couch, who comes from a background in construction and real estate development, decided to pivot into distilling after years of appreciating fine whiskey and recognizing Tennessee’s incredible potential beyond the big names. The team includes master distiller John Lunn, who brings decades of experience from larger operations and helped design their production setup. They’re focused on traditional Tennessee whiskey production with their own twist on the Lincoln County Process, using locally sourced grains when possible and Tennessee River water. What you’ll find here is a working distillery that’s still in its growth phase but serious about the craft. They’re producing bourbon, Tennessee whiskey, and experimenting with rye expressions, aging everything in new charred oak barrels in their on-site rickhouse. The facility includes a tasting room where you can sample their current releases while learning about their process and watching production happen in real time. It’s not the most polished tourist experience yet, but that’s part of the charm—you’re seeing a distillery that’s building something genuine.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Actual Grain to Glass In Working Progress

The location tells the story here—Guild sits where the historic Hales Bar Dam created one of the Tennessee River’s most significant engineering landmarks for nearly a century. Dam Whiskey Corp draws its identity from this connection to the river and the community that grew around the dam before it was replaced by Nickajack Dam downstream. They’re using Tennessee River water in their mash and have designed their facility to honor that industrial heritage. Their approach combines respect for traditional Tennessee whiskey methods with modern equipment and techniques, and they’re one of the few newer distilleries in this part of Tennessee that’s grain-to-glass rather than sourcing and bottling.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Production Floor Tours Still Smell Like Mash

You’ll tour through their production floor where you can see the mash tuns, fermentation tanks, and copper pot stills in action—this isn’t a show distillery, so what you’re seeing is their actual daily operation. The tasting room overlooks the production area through large windows, and tastings typically include their current bourbon and Tennessee whiskey expressions along with any experimental batches they’re willing to share. Tours run about 45 minutes and include the story of the location, their production process, and plenty of time for questions. The space feels like a working warehouse because that’s exactly what it is, complete with the smells of fermenting grain and aging oak.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Distilling Without the Show

If you’re interested in seeing a craft distillery that’s actually crafting rather than just marketing, Dam Whiskey Corp delivers an authentic experience. This isn’t for people who want Instagram-perfect backgrounds or highly polished presentations—it’s for whiskey enthusiasts who appreciate watching the real process and talking to people who know every detail of how their product gets made. The spirits they’re producing show real promise, and getting to taste them while learning about their methods makes for a solid afternoon. Just don’t expect the bells and whistles of larger tourist operations.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule your visit since they’re still building out their visitor program and production comes first. The GPS coordinates can be tricky in this rural area, so look for the facility signs along Hales Bar Road and don’t rely entirely on your phone’s directions. Weekday visits often offer better chances to see active production, and asking about their aging program will get you deeper insights into their long-term plans. Bring cash for bottle purchases since they don’t always have card processing set up for retail sales.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dam Whiskey Corp. — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation for tours?
Yes, definitely call ahead to schedule your visit. Since they’re still growing their visitor program and production takes priority, they need to know you’re coming to ensure someone can give you the full tour and tasting experience.
What’s the connection to the old Hales Bar Dam?
The distillery sits in the Guild community that grew around the historic Hales Bar Dam, which operated on the Tennessee River from 1913 to 1968. They use Tennessee River water in their whiskey production and draw inspiration from that industrial heritage in their branding and facility design.
How long has Dam Whiskey Corp been operating?
They started production in 2020, so their whiskeys are still relatively young as they build their aging inventory. This means you’re getting to experience a distillery that’s actively growing and developing their house style rather than an established operation.
